    Local roundup: Norwich ends Niantic's 10-game winning streak

    Norwich — Norwich scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap a 6-6 tie and beat Niantic 7-6 in a Zone VI American Legion baseball game on Friday night.

    The win snapped Niantic's 10-game winning streak. Dan MacLean went the distance for the win, overcoming a six-run top of the first inning. The knuckleballer struck out three with no walks. Josh Gurnack, Chance Gendron, Colby Jakan, Rico Adams and Griffen Gooden had two hits each for Norwich (8-18).

    Sam Gonski had three hits and Austin Toback, Logan Banker and Ben Keating had two hits each for Niantic (14-5).

    In other games:

    • Cooper Robinson pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts and Justin Marceau had three hits and scored as New London beat Waterford, 4-1. Pieter Khoury had two doubles, an RBI and a run for New London and Timmie Jackson added an RBI. Mike Rochetti singled and scored for Waterford.

    Schooners are blanked

    • The Mystic Schooners were held to two hits in a 2-0 loss to the Ocean State Waves in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Ryan Gray (Trinity) improved to 3-0 with seven scoreless innings for Ocean State (14-11). Lou Iannotti (Quinnipiac) broke up his no-hit bid with a one-out single in the top of the sixth inning. Ben Ruta (Wagner) singled in the seventh for the Schooners (16-10). 

    The Schooners will play the Danbury Westerners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader at Dodd Stadium in Norwich on Tuesday, July 14. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m., and the second game should start around 6:30 p.m. Both will be seven-inning games and will televised by CPTV Sports on the 17th (first game) and 18th (second game). 

    Tigers fall

    • The State College Spikes broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to a 7-5 win over the Connecticut Tigers in a New York-Penn League game. Christin Stewart, Will Allen and Tanner Donnels had two hits each and Victor Padron drove in two runs for the Tigers (10-10). 

    Stewart homered and drove in three runs as the Tigers beat Spikes 7-2 on Thursday night. Brett Pirtle and Donnels had three hits each and A.J. Simcox singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Tigers. Spenser Watkins (2-1) earned the victory, allowing one hit and one run over five innings.

    Babe Ruth state tournament (15)

    • Trumbull beat Waterford in eight innings, 7-5, in the opening game of the tournament. Waterford’s Matt Driscoll’s tied the game in the seventh with a two-run single and Walker Sutman doubled twice. Also, Colin Bakken pitched seven innings. Trumbull plays Groton today (5 p.m.) in the latter’s opening game. Waterford will play the loser of today’s Milford-North Haven game on Sunday at 11 a.m.

    State LL softball (11-12)

    • Waterford advanced to Sunday's Division III final with an 11-1 win over Glastonbury in four innings. Waterford plays tonight's Glastonbury-Madison winner at East Hartford at 3 p.m. The winner advances to the state finals. Jessica Sanjuan and Riley Mazzella had two hits each and Anna Kovacs and Chelsea Santos had doubles for Waterford. Rachel Nasser pitched a three-hitter for the win.

    District 6 LL softball (9-10)

    • Carli LoPresto pitched a complete game and had three hits and two RBI as Pawcatuck beat Montville 29-13. Madelyn Stepski had three hits and drove in three runs and Madison Mendez tripled and drove in two runs for Pawcatuck. Abby Luyten had three hits and two RBI, Aliyah Dantzler tripled and Baylee Gagnier doubled for Montville.

    • Pawcatuck had 23 hits in a 24-6 win over New London on Thursday night. Phoebe Werling homered twice and drove in three runs, Sophia Fernholz had three hits and Carli LoPresto, Carly Constantine and Cayla Beverly drove in three runs each for Pawcatuck. Ariana Guinassi doubled for New London.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • TriCounty beat Waterford 7-6 on Thursday night. Chandler Magnuson had two hits and drove in a run and Javier Denizard had a doubled for TriCounty. Cody Cleary, Tom Feliciano and Tyler Howser had two hits each for Waterford. 

    District 11 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Brian Miskiewicz hit a two-run homer and Derek Trudeau had a two-run triple Thursday as Norwich beat Jewett City 11-2. Griffin Pontbriant was the winnnig pitcher.

    Little League baseball (9-10)

    • Blake Chapman pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and had two hits and four RBI as Montville beat North Stonington, 23-0. Miles Sarmiento had three hits and three RBI, Andrew Wigfield had two hits and three RBI, and Anthony Martin and Cole Terni each had a hit and two RBI for Montville. Kyle Kessler and Matt Pierce both had a hit for North Stonington.

    • Dylan Meyer allowed two hits over five innings with nine strikeouts as Mystic beat Lyme/Old Lyme, 9-0. Ryan Carney had a double and two RBI, Jason Hartman had a double and an RBI, and Jackson Lalima had a double and a triple for Mystic. David Evers had two hits for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    • Sean O’Connell had two home runs and four runs and Sean Salvador and Nate Hynes both went 3-for-3 as Waterford downed New London, 15-2. Evan McCue pitched the win for Waterford. Greg Santora Jr. had two hits and two RBI for New London and Randy Vidal scored twice.

    • Owen Elmer and Gavin O’Brien combined on a one-hitter as East Lyme defeated Groton, 26-0. Gavin O’Brien went 4-for-4, including a double, with five RBI and three runs for East Lyme and Patrick Kelly had a double and five runs for East Lyme. Also, Owen Elmer went 2-for-3, including a double, with three RBI and Chris Stevens hit a bases loaded double. Rey Hidalgo had Groton’s only hit.
