    Local roundup: Waterford wins state Division III softball tournament

    East Hartford — Anna Kovacs hit a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning as Waterford beat Madison on Sunday, 3-1, to win the Connecticut Division III majors (11-12) softball tournament.

    Rachel Miller pitched a two-hitter for Waterford and Madison Nott had two hits. Gina McKittrick also doubled.

    Waterford advances to the state tournament at Bristol’s Giamatti-Breen Field. It starts the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday against the Division IV winner (Coventry or Windsor).

    Baseball

    State Babe Ruth (15)

    • Waterford beat Milford 2-0 in a losers' bracket game. The District 6 champions host Norwalk in a losers' bracket game again tonight, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Matt Driscoll went the distance for the win, pitching a four-hitter. Ed Aledia and Driscoll had two hits each for Waterford, which got a much-needed second run in the top of the seventh inning on Chris Persi's sacrifice fly. Clancy Suzi's sacrifice was also key in the seventh.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Max Adams pitched a two-hitter as Waterford beat Danbury, 3-0, at Community House Park. Peter Turello had two hits and Liam Spellman, Trevor Yeomans and Dylan Bosco had doubles for Waterford, which is 2-0 in pool play. It plays fellow unbeaten Stamford today at the same site (5:30 p.m.).

    • East Lyme dropped to 1-1 in pool play with a 4-1 loss to Trumbull. Matt Malcom doubled twice and scored for East Lyme.

    State Babe Ruth (13)

    • Sophie Dubreuil and T.J. Horner each hit two-run doubles as East Lyme beat Trumbull, 5-0, and clinched a spot in Thursday’s semifinal game. East Lyme (2-0 in pool play) faces unbeaten Newtown tonight at Danbury’s Rogers Park (5:30 p.m.).

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Cooper Robinson had four hits, leading New London to a 6-4 win over Moosup. Robinson doubled and scored three times and Jeremy Santos singled, had a two-run triple and drove in three runs for New London. Pieter Khoury pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the win and had two hits. Gabby Cortorreal had three hits and Justin Marceau singled twice for New London.

    • Jewett City scored a run in the top of the seventh inning and held on to beat Niantic 1-0. Austin Toback had three hits and Matt Fanelli had two hits for Niantic. Connor Elliot took the loss, striking out seven.

    Zone VI Junior Legion

    • Niantic lost to Jewett City 6-5. Robby Fusari singled and doubled and Kris Haines and Shawn Anhalt had doubles for Niantic (12-7).

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Elija Morton hit for the cycle as he went 5-for-5 to lead New London past East Haddam, 12-5. Frank Pacheco hit a home run for New London. Aiden Clarke had a two-run home run for East Haddam.

    • Winning pitcher Carter Chambers had three hits, two runs and an RBI as East Lyme downed Mystic, 16-4. Owen Robbins had two hits, including a grand slam, Nolan Connolly had three hits, four runs and an RBI, and Will Kane had a double, a two-run home run and two runs for East Lyme. Also, Alex Fraser had two hits, including a double, with three runs and an RBI and Dan Allard had two hits, two runs and pitched the final two innings. Justin Erb had a two-run home run for Mystic and Cam McGugan added a solo home run and scored twice. Eric Leuchner added a solo home run and Alex DelCampo two hits.

    • Trey Brennan, Jared Burrows and Ryan O'Connell and each had a single and home run as Waterford beat Montville, 10-0, in five innings. Luke Sokolski had a home run for Waterford and Connor Podeszwa and O'Connell combined on a one-hitter.

    • Winning pitcher D.J. Beaudet struck out 10 and Giovanni Galatioto had three hits, including a two-run double, as Groton bested Lyme/Old Lyme, 5-0, late Saturday. Matt Mojica had a two-run double for Groton and Max Grossman added two hits. Jack Carney reached base three times for Lyme/Old Lyme and Sam Richardson, Tate Sawden, Conner Wyman each had a hit.

    District 10 LL baseball (10-11)

    • Will Rocchetti had three hits, including a double and three-run home run, as Waterford beat East Lyme in five innings, 13-3, in the first game of the championship series. Will Sutman had three hits, including a two-run home run, Logan Avin had two hits, including a home run, and Jordan Elci and Preston Tabor each had two hits for Waterford. Ryan Wei doubled and Matt Bradley singled for East Lyme. Game 2 is tonight (5:30) at Waterford.

    • Matt Bradley had two hits, two runs and an RBI as East Lyme beat New London late Saturday, 10-0, in a five-inning semifinal. Cannon Dean had two hits and an RBI, Ayush Mishra had two hits and an RBI and Nathan Licitra had two hits. Winning pitcher Ryan Wei also allowed two hits over 4 1/3 innings. Hunter McDuff, Ronde Ford and Jerrickson Jiminez each had a hit for New London.

    New York-Penn League

    • Jose Pujols walked with the bases loaded to force home Zack Coppola for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Williamsport Crosscutters handed the Connecticut Tigers their third straight loss, 3-2, before 2,463 at Bowman Field. Jan Hernandez hit a two-run home run for the Crosscutters (17-5). A.J. Simcox doubled and scored and Brett Pirtle scored for the Tigers (10-12).

    NECBL all-stars

    • Aaron Hill of the Mystic Schooners has been named as the starting shortstop for the South Division in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. Hill (UConn) is a former Fitch High School standout. Teammate Ben Ruta (Wagner) was selected as a starting outfielder in the game, which will be held July 19 at Sanford, Maine.

    Former St. Bernard School star Willie Rios is one of three other Schooners selected to the team. Rios and Jason Foley (Sacred Heart) are on the pitching staff and third baseman Rich Slenker (Yale) is a reserve. 

    Swimming

    Mystic SharkFest

    • Dakota Williams of Groton finished third in the Mystic SharkFest 1500-meter swim on Saturday. Williams, The Day's Swimmer of the Year this year, graduated from Fitch last month. He completed the race in a time of 16:34. Sian Pearson, a 24-year-old woman from Newton, N.J., won with a time of 16:05 and Jon Wilkinson of Rye, N.H., was second in 16:10.

    Other locals finishing in the top 10 were Williams Johnson of Niantic (6th, 17:00), Derek Albertson of Norwich (8th, 17:13) and Merin Troutman of Mystic (9th, 17:27).
