    Eighty-nine youth sailors compete at Niantic Bay

    East Lyme — Eighty-nine competitors in 64 boats gathered Thursday for the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival/Larry White Junior Regatta at Niantic Bay Yacht Club.

    David and Jonathan Viens of the Niantic Bay Sailing Academy finished first in the Blue Jay Fleet, while Matthew Burnham and Taro Sochi of Fishers Island won the Club 420 division. Tristan Chang of Watch Hill was the overall winner of the Optimist division, as well as the first-place finisher in the Optimist Blue Fleet. Libby Redmond of the NBSA was first in the Red Fleet, Harvey DeMovick of Watch Hill won the White Fleet and Simon Weekes of Sachems Head was the Green Fleet champ.

    Results were (Blue Fleet and overall Optimist results are not yet final due to a requested redress):

    Blue Jays (5 races) — 1. David Viens/Jonathan Viens (NBSA), 7; 2. Nico Menendez/Alex Manthous (NBSA), 12; 3. Sadie Bowman/Ainsley Falcone (NBSA), 16; 4. Bridget Russ/Daisy Colantuono (NBSA), 21.

    Club 420s (6 races) — 1. Matthew Burnham/Taro Sochi (Fishers Island), 8; 2. Lawrence Hennessy/Kate Ryan (Pettipaug), 22; 3. Adam Gibbs/Liam Bornstein (NESS), 31; 4. Alex Hughes/Chris Currie (Pettipaug), 41; 5. Evan Spalding/Alex Bowdler (Wadawanuck), 44.

    Optimist Green (4 races) — 1. Simon Weekes (Sachems Head), 11; 2. John Shauhnessy (PYC), 12; 3. Ike Schutz (Sachems Head), 14; 4. Emmett Rosweth (PYC), 21; 5. Gus Montana (PYC), 21.

    Optimist Red (7 races) — 1. Libby Redmond (NBSA), 26; 2. Eli Gleason (MBC), 31; 3. Kristen Healy (NBSA), 46; 4. Chris Annino (RIYC), 57.

    Optimist White (7 races) — 1. Harvey DeMovick (WHYC), 59; 2. Baxter Menzies (NESS), 73; 3. Zigmund Bereday (FIYC), 86; 4. Jack Redmond (NBSA), 92; 5. Ian Lent (Black Rock YC), 112.

    The Optimist fleet competes in the USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival/Larry White Junior Regatta at the Niantic Bay Yacht Club on Thursday.
