Local roundup: Rios honored as NECBL's top pro prospect

North Adams, Mass. — Mystic Schooners left-handed pitcher Willie Rios (Maryland) was honored as the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Top Pro Prospect for the 2015 season.

A freshman last season at the University of Maryland, the 6-foot, 200-pound Rios was a 26th-round draft selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014 before choosing to attend college instead.

He enjoyed an excellent summer for the Schooners, finishing the regular season 4-0 with a 1.80 earned run average (fifth in the NECBL), striking out 41 in seven starts and 35 innings and holding hitters to an average of .202. The Schooners reached the NECBL Championship Series.

Rios is transferring from Maryland to Florida SouthWestern State junior college and will be eligible for the 2016 draft.

    Tigers blank Spinners

    • Will Allen scored on a two-out wild pitch in the first inning and the Connecticut Tigers went on to beat the Lowell Spinners 1-0 in a New York-Penn League game played before 4,595 fans at Dodd Stadium. Allen reached on a single and moved up on an error. Spenser Watkins (5-4) allowed three hits over seven innings to earn the victory, striking out seven and walking none. Jake Shull pitched two innings of relief, striking out four, to earn his seventh save. The Tigers managed just two hits.

    Skarzenski to be honored

    • Mitchell College women’s basketball coach MaryLynn Skarzenski will be inducted into the Nichols College Athletic Hall of Fame next month, it was announced Friday.

Skarzenski will be one of four athletes inducted at the ceremony, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Chalmers Field House.

Skarzenski started every game of her collegiate playing career for the women's basketball team and was a four-time CCC All-Conference first team selection. She was named CCC Player of the Year as a senior and CCC Rookie of the Year as a freshman, and in between she was a two-time CCC Defensive Player of the Year pick. She finished her career ranked fourth all-time in scoring at Nichols with 1,333 points, and she remains the program’s all-time leader in assists (641), steals (409) and games started and played (115).

During her career, Skarzenski led the Bison to a record of 83-32 (.721) that included four ECAC Championship appearances and a school record 25-win season in 2008-09. The 83 wins were the most in any four-year span in the 35-year history of Nichols women’s basketball.

A native of Woodbridge, N.J., Skarzenski graduated from Nichols in 2009 with a degree in math. Already a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (class of 2013), Skarzenski is entering her third season at the helm of the Mitchell program. In two seasons with the Mariners she has produced a 27-9 record in league play with consecutive semifinals appearances in the New England Collegiate Conference Championship.
