    Local roundup: Tigers top ValleyCats 9-4

    Troy, N.Y. — The Connecticut Tigers scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning and went on to beat the Tri-City ValleyCats 9-4 in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday.

    The Tigers (35-37) close out their season with a game against the ValleyCats today at 5 p.m.

    Corey Baptist's two-run single capped the inning. Pat Mackenzie had a run-scoring triple and Tyler Servais also singled home a run in the inning.

    Keaton Jones was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Jose Zambrano (two RBI), Tanner Donnels, Servais and Baptist had two hits each for Connecticut.

    Women's soccer

    • Rachel Hill scored with 36 seconds left in the second half, lifting No. 25 UConn to a 2-1 win over Harvard in a nonleague game. Harvard (1-1-1) took the lead on Joan Fleishman's goal in the 70th minute and UConn (4-0) tied the game on Samantha McGuire's goal in the 86th minute.

    Field hockey

    • Charlotte Veitner and Amelia Iocabucci scored three goals each as No. 1 UConn beat Columbia 9-1 in a nonleague game. Mckenzie Townsend, Amanda Collins and Kendall Youngblood also scored for the Huskies (4-0).  

    Speedbowl

    • Keith Rocco of Berlin won the SK Modifieds race on Saturday night at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl and finished second in the Late Models race.

    With 23 laps left in the 35-lap race, Rocco passed Paul Kusheba IV of Monroe and held on to win the SK Modifieds race. Plainville's Ted Christopher was second and Kusheba IV finished third. Jason Palmer of Berlin won the Late Models race, taking the lead in the 30-lap race with 12 laps to go and hanging on. Jeff Smith of Old Lyme finished third.

    Also winning races on Saturday were Jordan Hadley of Quaker Hill (Mini Stocks), Ed Gertsch Jr. of East Haven (Limited Sportsman) and Dana Dimatteo of Farmington (Legends). Charles Canfield of East Haven was second and Nathan Taylor of Preston third in the Mini Stocks, Allen Coates Sr. of Ledyard was second and Al Stone III of Durham third in the Limited Sportsman and Mikey Flynn of Hampden, Mass., was second in the Legends race followed by Devin O'Connell of Madison.
