    Local roundup: Stonington softball alone in the top spot in ECC Medium

    Waterford — The Stonington High School softball team took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and went on to beat Waterford 6-4 Monday in a matchup of previously undefeated teams in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division.

    Abby Blanchard contributed an RBI single and the Bears scored twice more on errors to go up 5-3.

    Abby Flakus had two hits, including a triple for Stonington (10-2, 6-0), while Cameron Dreher and Erin Craig also tripled. Lainnie Connor added a sacrifice fly.

    Waterford (7-4, 5-1) scored twice in the fourth in a triple by Avery Kosma and a sacrifice fly by Jill Sykora to take the 3-2 lead. Sykora also had an RBI double in the sixth.

    In other games:

    • Kaylie Crosby hit a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning for East Lyme's 7-6 victory over Woodstock Academy in the ECC Large Division. Trailing 6-3, East Lyme's Hannah Lebeau led off the seventh with a double. After a walk to Alex Marsh, Alexandra Chambers singled to load the bases. Crosby hit the second pitch of her at-bat on a line over the center field fence for the victory. Isabel Siciliano added a two-run homer for East Lyme (9-2, 3-2).

    • Madison Flerra-Weaver went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI as Killingly downed New London 14-2 in the ECC Medium. Riley Barnes had two hits, a run and an RBI for New London (2-10, 0-6) and J'Lise Potter had two hits and an RBI.

    • Amanda Perkins and Katie Banta had the only two hits for Montville in a 14-0 loss to Griswold in the ECC Medium. Montville fell to 4-8, 1-5. Shyla Krick (6-1) earned the win for Griswold (8-3. 3-2).

    • Sam Muller and Kendra Perez combined to pitch a no-hitter, leading Wheeler past St. Bernard 16-1 in an ECC Small game shortened to five innings. Raven Houck had a single, double, an RBI and scored four runs for the Lions (5-3, 4-0). St. Bernard fell to 1-8, 1-4.

    Baseball

    • Cam Winarz went the distance, pitching a two-hitter while striking out 12 and walking two, as St. Bernard blanked Griswold 6-0 in the ECC Small. Mark Malchiodi had two doubles and two RBI while Mason Knutson had two hits and two RBI and Brian Guetens added two hits and RBI and Josh Gurmack finished with three hits for St. Bernard (4-8, 3-2).

    • Matt Shane pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and no earned runs as Bacon Academy edged Ledyard, 2-1, for its first ECC Large win of the season. Peter Swain had a RBI single for Bacon (6-5, 1-4) and Shane went 2-for-3 and scored. Trevor Bolduc had two hits and an RBI and pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and no earned runs for the Colonels (4-6, 2-3) and Ty Ebdon scored.

    • Sean McBride belted a three-run home run and an RBI double to power Norwich Tech past Grasso Tech 19-0 in the Constitution State Conference. Winning pitcher Mitch Clapsadle allowed two hits in five innings and went 2-for-4 with a solo homer while John Staubley went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Warriors (7-6, 5-1). Mike Tatti and Antonio Lopez each had a single for the Eagles.

    • Cooper St. Germain had the only hit for Old Lyme in a 4-0 Shoreline Conference loss to Morgan. Chad Neri pitched a shutout for Morgan (10-2). The Wildcats slipped to 4-8 overall.

    Boys' golf

    • Cristian Brown earned medalist honors (44) to help East Lyme to its first win of the season, 5-2 over Fitch in the ECC Large. Nick Hill shot a 46 for East Lyme (1-4, 1-2) and James Foster a 52. Kyle Musella shot a 50 for the Falcons (0-8, 0-3).

    • Morgan’s Kevin Daley earned medalist honors (40), however Old Lyme tied the Huskies with 174 points and also topped Parish Hill (213 points). Matt McCarthy and Will Roberts both scored 42 for Old Lyme (6-0-1) and Graham Aird shot a 44.

    • Alex Segaline shot a 37 for Haddam-Killingworth in its 185-226 win over Norwich Tech. Chris Feder-Craney shot a 51 for Norwich Tech (1-5) and Mike Jester shot a 54.

    • Jordan Rogers fired a 46 to earn medalist honors, leading New London past Windham 7-0 at the Golf Club of Windham. The Whalers (4-5) posted a team medal point of 192.

    Boys' lacrosse

    • Tyler Price scored the game-winning goal for Montville in its 8-7 win over St. Bernard/Wheeler in the ECC Small. Chris Koteki had two goals and an assist for the Indians (6-3, 3-2) and Price had three goals and an assist. Also, Dane Concasia scored twice. Pat Brady scored six goals for the St. Bernard  (3-5, 2-3) and Jack O'Leary had a goal and an assist.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • Sloane Sweitzer had three goals and two assists in Old Lyme's 14-2 win over St. Paul's. Abby Berger added two goals and four assists while Sydney Cowell, Lauren Quaratella and Anna Sather scored two goals apiece for the Wildcats.

    Boys' volleyball

    • Ray Wang had 10 kills and an ace and Alex Jacobik had six kills in NFA's 3-0 loss to Xavier. Game scores were 25-13, 25-18, 25-19.

    Sun waive Handford

    • The Connecticut Sun waived rookie guard Aliyyah Handford on Monday to give it 13 players in camp. Handford was a three-time All-Big East first-team pick at St. John’s and was selected with the 27th overall pick (third round) in April’s draft.

    All-Star guard Alex Bentley arrived in camp, leaving forward Camille Little and post Aneika Henry-Morello as the only two players yet to complete their overseas commitments. A team can only carry a maximum of 15 players during camp and 12 during the season.

    Connecticut plays host to the Chicago Sky and San Antonio Stars on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, in preseason games at Mohegan Sun Arena (both games are at 7 p.m.) The Sun play another preseason game on Sunday at the Dallas Stars, and open the regular season at Chicago on May 14.
