    Rocco wins SK Modified race at Speedbowl opener

    Waterford — Wallingford's Keith Rocco continued his dominance at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, winning the 35-lap SK Modified race on Sunday in the rain-delayed season opener.

    Rocco won the 30-lap Late Model race on Saturday, when eight of the 10 scheduled races were rained out. Ten-year-old Tyler Barry of Griswold won the 20-lap Bandoleros race on Saturday.

    When things resumed on Sunday, Rocco resumed his winning. He has swept the SK Modified and Late Model features at the last five Bud Blastoff events at Waterford.

    Other winners on Sunday included Al Stone III (Limited Sportsman), Tony Membrino Jr. (SK Light), Wayne Burroughs Jr. (Mini Stock), Dana DiMatteo (Legends), Bert Ouellette (New England Truck Series), Dave Gargaro Jr. (X-Car) and Dave Yardley III (Super X-Car).

    It was the seventh time in the last eight years that Rocco as won the opening SK Modified event at the track. Ted Christopher of Plainville was second and Waterford's Rob Janovic Jr. was third.

    Stone began defense of his 2015 Limited Sportsman championship at the track in dominating fashion. Monte Gibbs was second and Ed Gertsch Jr. third.

    Oakdale's Burroughs ,beginning defense of his 2015 Mini Stock championship, started on the pole and led every lap on the way to victory in the 25-lap Mini Stock feature. Dave Trudeau was second and Ken Cassidy Jr. of Lisbon third.

    Membrino picked up his first career SK Light Modified victory. Brett Gonyaw was second and Corey DiMatteo finished third.

    Dana DiMatteo started second in the Legends feature, went to the lead early and went unchallenged at the front the rest of the way in the 25-lap feature. Noah Korner was second and Mike Flynn was third.

    Gargaro passed Richard Nye of Groton for the lead on lap 19 and won the 20-lap X-Car feature. Christopher Thomas of Waterford was second and Nye finished third.

    Yardley held off Ray Reed in the last three laps of the 20-lap Super X-Car feature. Marc Shafer of Groton was third.

    Ouellette rolled easily to victory in the 25-lap Mr. Rooter New England Truck Series feature. Jerry Giordano Jr. was second and Tyler Chapman of Waterford was third.
