    Local roundup: Fitch finishes No. 1 in state softball poll

    The undefeated Fitch High School softball team finished the season ranked No. 1 in Connecticut, following the final GameTimeCT/Register Top 10 poll Sunday.

    The Falcons, who won the Class L title Friday over Masuk 2-0, finished 27-0. Unbeaten Class LL champ Cheshire (27-0) placed second, while Class M champion Seymour was third.

    Fitch received 10 of 15 first-place votes from the panel of sports writers and coaches. Cheshire received five first-place votes.

    "I'm happy for the girls and we've worked hard to be No. 1,” Fitch coach Arielle Cooper said. “But all in all it’s just a ranking. We can't stop working hard. But it's great for the seniors to go out helping their team be No. 1.”

    Schooners fall

    • The Newport Gulls jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and went on to beat the Mystic Schooners 8-1 in a New england Collegiate Baseball League game. Mystic (2-2) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth inning when Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) singled and later scored. C.J. Moore (Grambling) doubled for the only other Mystic hit.

    Former St. Bernard standout Willie Rios (Miami) took the loss. Rios allowed seven hits and three earned runs over 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and four walks.  

    Road racing

    • Gregory Weaver of Niantic won the Niantic Bay 10K on Friday, finishing with a time of 36:34. Annmarie Charno of East Lyme was the top owmen's finisher, coming in 17th with a time of 43:38.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Justin Scott of East Lyme (37:52), Devon Johnson of Old Lyme (38:16), Bruce Christensen of Bolton (38:46), Brian Polkus of Ashford (39:15), Tommy O'Gorman of West Hartford (39:59), John Minervino of Higganum (40:07), Larz Selmar-Larsen of New London (40:26), Jonathan Buckingham of Old Lyme (40:28) and Matt Yoder of Manchester (41:03).
