Fitch names Silvan its new boys' basketball coach

Groton — Charles Silvan, the former head coach at Weaver High School, was named the new boys' basketball coach at Fitch on Monday, athletic director Marc Romano announced.

"Charles is a person of high character who understands the role athletics play in high school," Romano said in a statement released by Fitch. "He has energy, enthusiasm and a solid background; he's also enjoyed success everywhere he has coach.

"I feel Charles is what this program needs at this time."

Silvan, a St. Bernard graduate, replaces Alick Furtick, who resigned during the 2015-16 season.

Silvan has worked as a health and physical education teacher in the Hartford school system for the past 12 years. He was Weaver's head coach from 2010-14, leading the Beavers to a runnerup finish in the 2013 Class S state tournament.

He was a volunteer assistant at Windsor High School the past two seasons before accepting the Fitch offer. Prior to coaching at Weaver and Windsor, Silvan spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at East Lyme and has been an assistant football coach at New London, St. Bernard and Wethersfield.

After graduating from St. Bernard, Silvan received his bachelor's degree in healthy and physical education at Easter Connecticut State University and earned a master's degree in school administration from American International and Springfield College.
