Local roundup: Ledyard wins Junior League Softball title
Stonington — Ledyard won its first District 10 title, beating Pawcatuck 8-5 in the third and deciding game in the best-of-three Junior League (13-14) softball championship series Wednesday night.
Hannah Smith was the winning pitcher, striking out nine, and had two hits and scored twice. Sara Rivers finished up, earning a save, and reached base four times. Jenna Topalis had two hits and Amanda Cox reached base three times for Ledyard.
Pawcatuck, last year's Eastern Regional champion, was led offensively by Tori LoPresto, Adrien Bowen and Mia Tomillo.
Schooners split
• The Mystic Schooners split a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader with the Upper Valley Nighthawks, winning the second game 9-4 after losing the opener 10-3.
Groton's Aaron Hill (UConn) drove in four runs in the nightcap, with an RBI single in the third and a three-run homer in the fifth. Richard Slenker (Yale) was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and an RBI triple. Stonington's Doug Domnarski (UConn) picked up the win, allowing five hits and three runs over five innings. Chase Lunceford (Louisiana Tech) had a run-scoring double in the first inning and a leadoff homer in the seventh in the first game for the Schooners (9-8).
New York-Penn League
• Blaise Salter had three hits and drove in three runs with a pair of doubles as the Connecticut Tigers beat the Lowell Spinners 8-3. Will Savage and Sam Machonis had two hits each and Savage scored three runs for the Tigers (7-6). Starter Locke St. John (1-1) got the win, allowing four hits and two runs over six innings.
Zone 6 Senior Legion
• Ledyard/Pawcatuck lost to Jewett City 5-1. Conner McCrea homered for Ledyard/Pawcatuck (3-11).
District 6 Babe Ruth (15)
• East Lyme advanced to the championship round with an 11-6 win over Groton in the losers' bracket final. Tom Mason, who made a great catch in the top of the first inning, got East Lyme started with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Griffin Powers had a three-run double and Eddie Kaftan had two hits and scored four runs for East Lyme, which meets unbeaten Waterford at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Washington Park in Groton. A deciding game, if needed, would be Friday. Chip Kamercia drove in two runs and Jordan Lowell and Kyle Egan had RBI for Groton.
District 6 Babe Ruth (13)
• Nolan Connolly and Dan Allard combined to pitch a two-hitter as East Lyme beat Pawcatuck 7-0 Tuesday night in the losers' bracket final. East Lyme plays unbeaten Waterford in the championship round at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. If East Lyme wins, a deciding game will be played Friday. Patrick Tolley, who scored twice, and Connolly each doubled, singled and drove in a run for East Lyme.
SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth
• Cameron Brown pitched a two-hitter over five innings for the win as Tri-County beat East Lyme Black 14-2 Tuesday. Noah Tuohey was 3-for-3 with a double and Tom Cotter and Brad Ashton had run-scoring doubles for Tri-County (1-3). Bryan Carambot doubled home Brett Bragaw for East Lyme (1-3).
District 10 baseball (11-12)
• Waterford scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Pawcatuck 5-4. Logan Avin and Jordan Elci combined for the win. Dorian White struck out seven over five innings and Brandt Ogden had two hits for Pawcatuck.
• New London hit five home runs and beat Groton 8-3. Hunter MacDuff, Kenny Miller, Guiseppie Satti, Edgar Mateo and Gio Ferguson homered, Coby Smith tripled and C.J. Hamilton gave up one run over five innings of relief for New London. David Tompkins had two hits and pitched six innings for Groton.
• Owen Elmer and Will Anglin each went 2-for-4 with home runs and four RBI as East Lyme beat Lyme/Old Lyme 16-6. Cannon Dean had two singles, a double and two RBI, Rowan Mundell singled, doubled and scored three runs, Ethan Novick and Patrick Kelly had two hits each and Nathan Licitra was the winner for East Lyme. Frank Sablone and Alex Roth (two RBI) homered and Aidan Powers doubled and drove in a run for Lyme/Old Lyme.
District 10 baseball (10-11)
• Jackson Long doubled, homered twice and drove in eight runs as Waterford beat East Lyme 14-2. Evan McCue was 3-for-3, Evan Piotrowski tripled and McCue and Anthony Sharples teamed for the win for Waterford. Drew Beckham had two hits and Anthony Enos drove in two runs for East Lyme.
•Luke Noreika was 4-for-4 as Mystic beat Pawcatuck 11-6. Noreika doubled, drove in three runs and scored three times. Ethan Mireault (triple), Mikey Wagner and Aiden Whitten (three RBI) had two hits each for Mystic. Nate Wheeler singled and doubled for Pawcatuck.
District 10 baseball (9-10)
• Jackson LaLima was 4-for-4 with a home run and triple as Mystic beat Montville 20-2 Tuesday night. Donte Valentine was the winning pitcher.
College men's hockey
• UConn will play Maine at Fenway Park in Boston on Jan. 14, 2017 as part of Frozen Fenway, an event featuring two Hockey East doubleheaders. New Hampshire and Northeastern will play after the UConn-Maine game. The event opens on Jan. 7 with Boston University playing Massachusetts and Boston College playing Providence.
