    Local roundup: Tigers let one slip away in the ninth

    Morgantown, W.Va. — Clark Eagan's single with one out in the ninth inning scored Matt Diorio and lifted the West Virginia Black Bears to a 4-3 victory over the Connecticut Tigers in a New York-Penn League game Friday night.

    The Tigers (20-14) scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning, scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly by Will Savage, an RBI double by Cole Baumi and a run-producing single by Blaise Salter. 

    American Legion baseball

    • New London, fresh off a three-game series win over rival Niantic, begins its next phase of the Connecticut American Legion baseball tournament on Saturday when it faces Tolland noon in the South Windsor Super Regional at Rotary Field. The four-team double-elimination tournament also features Avon and Rocky Hill/Cromwell/Portland, who will play the second game at 3 p.m.

    In the Middletown Super Regional at Palmer Field, Cheshire plays Stamford at noon and Waterbury faces Stratford at 3 p.m. The two Super Regional winners will meet in a best-of-three series for the state championship beginning Friday, July 29, at Palmer Field.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Waterford Red (8-3) defeated Tri-County 8-7 on the final day of the regular season as Matt Driscoll had three hits, Matt Patton and Isaac Cuascut had two hits each and James Conlan added a triple.

    • Waterford Red defeated East Lyme Maroon 11-5 on Thursday as Derek Jones and Driscoll combined to pitch a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Conlan had three hits, including a triple, while Jones and Spencer Hoagland added two hits each and Tyler Hughes tripled. Owen Yourell and John Keens had two hits apiece for East Lyme Maroon (6-5) while Allaith Ghaihbeta added a double.

    State LL baseball (10-11)

    • The first night of the Connecticut Little League (10-11) baseball tournament at Newington was postponed by rain and the start of the double-elimination tournament has been pushed back to Saturday. Waterford, the Section 3 champion, will play Ellington at 6 p.m. while the Stamford National-Farmington game starts at 3 p.m.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • New London defeated Groton 13-1 at Martin Light was the winning pitcher and Derrel Mitchell and Almando Aquirre had two hits apiece.

    • East Lyme defeated Waterford 9-7 as pitcher Jake Gada had five strikeouts. Peter Sherwood and Quinn Killoy had two hits each and Niall Green and A.J. Montejano both hit doubles for East Lyme while Jameson Donovan had two hits and Remy Coderre doubled for Waterford.
