    Local roundup: Ryan Ramiz leads offensive explosion for Schooners

    Groton — Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) had three of Mystic's 14 hits as the Schooners defeated the Keene Swamp Bats 8-1 Thursday in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game.

    Ramiz drove in two, scored twice and hit his third home run of the season. Wagner College's Nick Mascelli (three runs scored), Yale's Richard Slenker (two RBI), Martin Figeuroa (URI) and Taishi Terashima (St. Bonaventure) all had two hits for Mystic (25-14).

    Kevin Magee (St. John's) started and allowed four hits and no runs with six strikeouts over five innings to earn the win.

    Keene is 16-24.

    New York-Penn League

    • Will Savage's RBI single in the fifth inning halved Connecticut's deficit, but the Tigers could not gain the upper hand on the Tri-City ValleyCats and lost 2-1.

    Daniel Woodrow led off the fifth with a triple and Savage followed with his single. However, that was the extent of Connecticut's offense, which despite having eight hits (two each from Cole Baumi and Josh Lester) left nine runners on base and hit into two double plays.

    Locke St. John (2-5) was the tough-luck loser for the Tigers (20-19). He allowed five hits and two runs over six innings with six strikeouts. Tri-City is 22-17.

    State softball tournament (9-10)

    • Waterford lost a hard-fought game against Seymour, 4-3 in seven innings, eliminating Waterford from the tournament. Anna Dziecinny pitched six innings, striking out 8, and Ava Burrows came in to pitch the seventh. Marina Colonis, Lucy D'Amico, Ava Burrows, Erica Mugovero, Melanie Martin and Zoe Zito all had hits for Waterford.

    State baseball tournament (9-10)

    • Winning pitcher Trace Morales helped Mystic beat Brooklyn/Pomfret, 10-5, on Wednesday. Colin O'Leary went 4-for-4 and Payton Neale homered. Jackson LaLima contributed three RBI.

    SEC Babe Ruth (16-18)

    • Tri-County defeated East Lyme Black 9-3 to advance to the losers' bracket final against Waterford Blue at 5:45 p.m. Friday at Leary Park. Tri-County defeated East Lyme Maroon 11-2 in a losers' bracket game Wednesday.

    • Waterford Red advanced to Saturday's championship game with a 23-3 victory Wednesday over Waterford Blue in a game shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

    Sutera tournament (11-12)

    • Rowan Mundell's home put East Lyme ahead for good, rallying the team from a 4-0 deficit for an 11-4 victory over Pawcatuck in the championship game Wednesday. Ryan Wei had two hits, Ethan Novick and Will Anglin doubled and Owen Elmer pitched five innings, striking out six, for the win. Jaden Kutz and Brandt Ogden had two hits each for Pawcatuck.

    Blessing of the Fleet 5K

    • Caroline Pierce of Westerly won the Blessing of the Fleet 5K in Stonington Borough, finishing in 19 minutes, 49 seconds. Kellen Voland of Ledyard was the men's winner in 20:49. There were 140 finishers.

    Montville Race Day

    • Victor Shanwenda, 16, won the 5K open race at Montville Race Day, Sunday, July 17 at Camp Oakdale, finishing in 19:13.2 seconds. April Lionberger, 40, was the top women's finisher in 26:40.7. In the 10K masters division race, for participants ages 40 and over, Jeffrey Vuono, 53, won in 42:22.9 and Sarah Osgood, 41, was the top women's finisher in 44:44 and second overall. The races are sponsored by the Montville Parks and Recreation Department and the Montville Rotary Club.
