    Local roundup: No. 1 UConn falls in field hockey

    College Park, Md. — The top-ranked UConn field hockey team had its 42-game regular-season winning streak snapped, falling to No. 5 Maryland 2-1 on Sunday.

    UConn (16-1) took the lead on a goal by Anna Middendorf in the fifth minute. Charlotte Veitner and Amanda Collins had assists on the goal.

    Maryland (13-3) tied the game on a goal by Grace Baldson in the 23rd minute and Welma Luus scored the game winner in the 31st minute.

    Men's water polo

    • Connecticut College lost to MIT 17-8 in the championship match at the Division III Championship at Erie, Pa. Carlos Heros scored three goals for Conn (9-13) and was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Dylan Pinckert.

    Women's rowing

    • Connecticut College placed 20th in the 35-team collegiate four in the 52nd Head of the Charles Regetta in Cambridge, Mass. Conn's boat included Isabelle Smith, Marissa Gildea, Maddie Fenderson, Amelia DeFrancis and Megan Murray.

    College sailing

    • Connecticut College's coed team finished ninth at the 18-team Sherman Hoyt Trophy Regatta at Brown University. Skipper Hugh MacGillivray, Eliza Garry and Austin Smith were fifth in the A division, and skipper Carter Pemberton, Albert Rodiger, Gwynie Dunlevy and Cooper Nefsky were ninth in the B Division.

    The women's team was 16th in the 17-team Mrs. Hurst Bowl in New Hampshire. Competing for Conn were Ragna Agerup, Rebecca Quirke, Cecilia Moreira, Jessica Hunnewell, Hannah King, Hannah Staples, Allie Maurillo, Paige Dunlevy and Julia Leighton. 

    Road racing

    • Joe Dotolo of Westerly won the URI 5K at Kingston, R.I., with a time of 25:50. Niantic's Way Hedding was 10th with a time of 31:22, earning him first place in his age division (60-69). 

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • Jack Cullen scored with 2:45 left in the first half and Stonington made the goal stand up for a 1-0 victory over Fitch on Saturday night. Cam Whalen assisted for the Bears (9-5-2), and goalie Joey Rosa made one save to earn the shutout. Weston Jacey made eight saves for the Falcons (7-7).
