    Local roundup: Conn women blank Wesleyan in regular-season finale

    Middletown — Connecticut College ended its regular season with a 2-0 victory over Wesleyan University in a New England Small College Athletic Conference women's soccer match.

    The Camels (10-4-1, 5-4-1) also earned the No. 7 seed for the upcoming NESCAC tournament and will visit No. 2 Amherst in Saturday's quarterfinal round at 12:30 p.m. Amherst beat Conn 2-1 during the regular season.

    Against Wesleyan (0-9-3, 0-7-3), Michelle Medina scored in the 18th minute and Alex Baltazar added an insurance goal with only four minutes remaining. It was Baltazar's ninth goal of the season.

    Goalie Bryanna Montalvo earned her fifth shutout of the season by making two saves.

    • Carley Phillips of Waterford scored three goals as Wellesley routed Coast Guard Academy 4-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference contest. Maddie Carlbot scored for the Blue (7-8-1, 4-4-1). Rachel Boohar had nine saves for the Bears (6-7-4, 2-5-2).

    Men’s soccer

    • Elvis Mendes scored the go-ahead goal at 87:49 as UMass-Dartmouth rallied to beat Coast Guard, 2-1. Matt Vidal scored for UMass-Dartmouth (11-5-1) and Danny Andrade had four saves. Austin Read scored, Alex Lane had the assist, and Dakota Harich had five saves for the Bears (9-4-3).

    College volleyball

    • Senior Susan West, playing her final home game, had a team-high 13 kills to lead Coast Guard to a 3-1 win over Wellesley in the NEWMAC. Game scores were 25-13, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-21. Madison Scott added 12 kills and six aces for the Bears (17-10, 6-3) while Alexi Deane had 10 kills, Emma Saunders eight kills, Michelle McGill and Hailye Reynolds 12 digs apiece and Makenna Martin 43 assists.

    Boys' soccer

    • Hunter Baillargeon broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the second half to lift St. Bernard to a 1-0 victory over Fitch in the regular-season finale for both schools. Juan Uran made four saves in goal for the Saints (7-8-1) while Weston Jacey and Nicholas Helbig combined to make eight saves for the Falcons (8-8).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Isabel Cavalieri converted a penalty corner less than five minutes into the match as Waterford defeated Fitch/Stonington 1-0 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Regan Mazzulli assisted on the goal for the Lancers (4-9-1, 4-6-1) and goalie Mikayla Brucolo made three saves. Erin Ritter stopped eight shots in goal for the Falcons (4-7-3, 3-7-3).

    H.S. swimming

    • Brookfield, the 2015 Class M runner-up, handed East Lyme its first loss, 100-83. The Vikings (12-1) picked up a pair of individual wins from Gretchen Stelter in the 50-yard freestyle (26.88 seconds) and Taylor Gray in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.16). Stelter also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:58.33) with Maeve Counter, Mary Kathryn Taylor and Carlie Biondi.

    Local golf

    • Black Hall Club assistant pro Adam Rainaud and Steve Madison combined to win the Connecticut Section PGA Del Kinney Pro-Pro Championship on Monday at Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford. They finished regulation with a 7-under 65 and then out-lasted two other duos on the first playoff hole. They combined for 13 birdies during their round. For the third straight year, Rainaud earned the Bob Shea Award that goes to the section's player of the year. He won four of the five section's major tournaments.

    • Two golfers recently recorded a hole-in-one at Elmridge Golf Course. Bob Dean recorded his first ace using a six iron on No. 7 on the red course while Julie Sweat accomplished the feat with a five wood on No. 8 on the white course.
