    Local roundup: Camels pull away from Bears in All-New London matchup

    New London — Tyler Rowe led all scorers with 23 points and Connecticut College used a 13-0 second-half run to beat the Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team 91-80 in a nonconference game between the two New London schools.

    Zuri Pavlin had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Daniel Janel (17), David Labossiere (14) and Lee Messier (11) all scored in double figures for Conn, which improved to 5-1 on the season.

    Micah Baldez led Coast Guard with 22 points and six assists, while Justin Kane finished with 18 points and seven rebounds and Patrick Witkowski added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Coast Guard.

    Coast Guard (3-3) led 37-30 in the first half following a 3-pointer by Kane with 5:37 left, but the Camels would use an 8-0 run to take the lead 38-37 on a dunk by Pavlin with 3:24 left as Conn outscored the Bears 17-4 to end the half and led 47-41 at the break.

    The Bears closed the gap to 47-46 by scoring the first five points of the second half before the Camels scored 13 straight to take a 60-46 lead with 13:52 left.

    In other games:

    • Elms picked up its first win of the season, topping Mitchell College 82-77 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Symon Smith (game-high 29), Trifon Bish and Conny Ihearahu combined for 66 points for Elms. Domenico Santiago paced Mitchell (0-4, 0-1) with 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Alan Morgan added 16 points and nine assists. Elms is 1-6, 1-1.

    • Amadi White had 16 points and 12 rebounds in UConn Avery Point's 75-65 loss to Mass Bay Community College. Tyrel Martinez added 14 points and 11 points and Mack Osias had 10 rebounds for the Pointers.

    Women's basketball

    • Liz Malman finished with a team-high 12 points, leading Connecticut College to an 84-68 win over Coast Guard in a nonconference game. Mairead Hynes added 11 points and Payton Ouimette finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Conn.

    Freshman Sami Ashton added a game-high six assists for the Camels (6-1), who won their third straight game.

    Gill Gerton had 15 points and nine rebounds for Coast Guard (2-4), which lost its fourth straight. Amanda Roy, a Stonington graduate, finished with 12 points, all in the second half, as she made a career-high four 3-pointers, while freshman Zoe Riis-Fallica had a career-high 11 points for the Bears. Freshman Laura Irish was also in double figures with 10 points for Coast Guard.

    • Francesca Pinard had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season, and Mitchell College defeated Elms 80-63 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Mitchell (2-4, 2-1) shot 48 percent. Camille Staggers came off the bench to add 14 points and Jessica Shepherd had nine for the Mariners, who scored the first nine points of the second quarter to take the lead for good. Elms is 4-3, 2-1.

    Men's soccer

    • Connecticut College senior midfielder Pat Devlin was honored Thursday as a second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America.

    Devlin won the New England Small Conference Athletic Conference regular-season scoring crown with 13 goals and 29 points. Four of the goals were game-winners. Devlin was named NESCAC Player of the Year, earning first team all-conference honors for the fourth straight year.

    Conn finished 10-5-1.

    Men's hockey

    • Brian Belisle had three goals and Joe Giordano and Jeff Thompson added two assists each in Conn College's 8-4 loss to Williams. Conn trailed 6-1 before Belisle scored the final two goals of the second period to shrink the margin. Ryan Mowery also scored for Conn (1-5, 1-3 NESCAC).

    • UConn got goals from Spencer Naas and Karl El-Mir and 34 saves from freshman Adam Huska to come away with a 2-2 overtime tie with No. 4 nationally ranked UMass Lowell at the XL Center. The teams scored all their goals in the second period. UConn is 5-6-6 overall and 3-3-2 in Hockey East.

    Women's hockey

    • Jessica Young had two goals and an assist to lead third-ranked Middlebury to a 3-1 victory and a series split with No. 9 Conn College, the Camels' first loss of the season. Kyla Floresca scored on a power play for Conn (4-1, 3-1 NESCAC), assisted by Michaela Igo and Katlyn Paiva and Katherine Chester had 20 saves.

    Men's swimming

    • Taylor Rowe (1,650 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Ross Garrett (100 butterfly, 50 butterfly) and Chasse Sodemann (100 breaststroke, 50 breaststroke) each won two individual events as Coast Guard Academy won the Connecticut Cup at Wesleyan for the second straight season. The Bears finished with 691 points. Garrett, Sodemann, Patrick Jackson and Joseph Rodriguez also swam on two winning relays apiece. Also winning individual events for the Bears were Jackson (100 backstroke), Rodriguez (50 free) and John Pompay (200 breaststroke).

    Women's swimming

    • Connecticut College won the Connecticut Cup at Wesleyan with 643 points, followed by Coast Guard second with 500 points. Kristen Young won two individual events for Coast Guard, taking the 100 freestyle (53.62) and the 200 free (1:57.27) and was a member of three relays teams for the Bears, including the first-place 400 free relay team along with Christine McCulla, Brooke Harkrader and Jackie Kokomoor. Samantha Kenis added a win in the 200 backstroke for the Bears.

    Men's indoor track

    • Ben Bosworth, Danny Aschale and Connor Trapp finished 1-2-3 in the 3,000 meters for Conn College at the Springfield Invitational. Bosworth's time of 8:44.31 earned him an invitation to the New England Division III championship.

    Women's indoor track

    • Conn College's Koko Mensah broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 3 1/4 inches and Bella Franz and Ashley Curran went 1-2 in the 3,000 meters at Springfield Invitational. Mensah broke the school record of 37-11 belonging to Lauren Kennedy. Taryn Gangi added a win for the Camels, taking the triple jump at 34-7 1/2.
