    Local colleges: Hot-shooting Conn men beat Mitchell 95-75

    New London — Connecticut College shot a blistering 69 percent in the first half en route to a 95-75 victory at Mitchell College in a men's college basketball game Saturday at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

    It was the fourth straight win for the Camels (7-1), who used an 18-0 run in the first half to wipe out an early 20-14 Mitchell lead.

    Zuri Pavlin had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Conn while Tyler Rowe added 16 points and four assists, Lee Messier came off the bench to score 14 points and Daniel Janel had 12 points.

    Alan Morgan led Mitchell (0-6) with 18 points and seven assists while Hasani Williams added 17 points and seven rebounds and Marvin Baker had eight points and nine rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Tyrel Martinez led Avery Point to a 92-79 victory over Roxbury Community College, finishing with 26 points and 21 rebounds. Amadi White had 13 points and 11 rebounds, Will Orr 16 points and 13 rebounds and Mack Osias 16 points and seven rebounds. Avery Point is 4-5.

    Women's basketball

    • Senior Liz Malman scored nine points, including the 1,000th of her career, as Conn College defeated Drew University 61-51. Malman is the 13th player in Conn history to surpass 1,000 points. Payton Ouimetted led the Camels (8-2) with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Meg Corcoran scored 10 points and Mairead Hynes added eight points and 10 rebounds. Drew is 3-6.

    • Courtney Erickson had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Trinity College to an 83-48 victory over Mitchell, the Mariners' third straight defeat. Freshman Allegra Jones led Mitchell (2-7) with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Kate McCormack added six points, four rebounds and four assists.

    Women's hockey

    • Katlyn Paiva scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on Lily Connolly's short-handed goal later in the third period as Conn College scored twice in the final period for a 3-1 victory over UMass Boston at Dayton Arena. Stephanie Izzi also scored for the Camels (5-2), who held a 50-12 edge in shots, and goalie Katherine Chester made 11 saves.

    UConn football

    • Wide receiver Noel Thomas Jr., safety Obi Melifonwu and kicker Bobby Puyol were the major award-winners during UConn's Awards Show on Friday night. Thomas was named Offensive Player of the year, Melinfonwu was named Defensive Player of the Year and Puyol the Special Teams Player of the Year. Thomas was winner of the Jasper T. Howard Award.

    Other award winners were: freshman wide receiver Keyion Dixon (Team Player of the year), freshman offensive tackle Matt Peart (Joseph M. Giannelli Newcomers of the Year), sophomore defensive lineman Sheridan Lawley (Most Improved Player), senior defensive lineman Sean Marinan (John L. Toner Scholar-Athlete Award), senior defensive lineman Mikal Myers (Kendall Madison Outstanding Power Player), junior linebacker Luke Carrezola (Brian Kozlowski Outstanding Big Skill Player) and linebacker Matt Walsh (Bleed Blue Award).
