    Local colleges: CGA men end swimming season with win over Wesleyan

    Middletown — Taylor Rowe won a pair of events as Coast Guard Academy ended its regular season with a 167-111 victory over Wesleyan University in a men's swimming meet on Saturday.

    Rowe captured the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.13 and 1,000 free in 9:53.96 for the Bears (6-2), who are now idle until the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship meet Feb. 16-19 at WPI.

    Coast Guard also picked up wins from Mike Franco in the 200 free (1:46.30), Chasse Sodemann in the 100 breaststroke (58.53), Joe Rodriguez in the 50 free (21.94), John Pompay in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.56), Zach Weeks in the 200 individual medley (1:59.89), and the 400 medley relay team of Patrick Jackson, Sodemann, Ross Garrett and Rodriquez (3:32.14).

    In other meets:

    • All-American A.J. Pite won three events as Conn College defeated host Wesleyan (199-80) and Fairfield (203-76) in a tri-meet on Friday night. Pite, a junior, won the 100-yard freestyle (47.36), 200 free (1:44.78) and 400 IM (4:07.58) for the Camels while George Tilneac added wins in the 50 butterfly (23.24) and 100 fly (51.19) and Jake Easton captured the 50 backstroke (28.80) and 100 back (1:01.70).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard lost its season finale 192-108 at Wesleyan. Kristen Young and Cece Marzinsky were double-winners for the Bears (4-6) as Young won the 100 freestyle (54.30) and 200 free (1:58.02) and Marzinsky captured the 100 butterfly (1:02.14) and 200 fly (2:17.90). Christine McCulla added a win in the 500 free (5:28.05) for Coast Guard.

    • Danielle Fergus, Lily Gribbel and Mary Erb won two events apiece as Conn College defeated host Wesleyan (205.5-88.5) and Fairfield (215-72) in a tri-meet on Friday night. Fergus won the 50-yard backstroke (28.05) and 100 back (59.24) for the Camels while Gribble captured the 50 freestyle (24.20) and 50 butterfly (25.95) and Erb won the 50 breaststroke (30.07) and 100 breast (1:06.13).

    Women's hockey

    • No. 9 Conn College lost to St. Anselm in a nonleague game, 3-1. Kaitlyn Spillane scored twice as St. Anselm (15-2-2) took a 3-0 lead. Julie Beattie scored on a power play for Conn (11-5-2) with Kylie Wilkes assisting. Katherine Chester had 22 saves for Conn.

    Men's hockey

    • Ryan Mowery of Conn College scored twice but the Camels fell to Williams 4-3 in a NESCAC game. Rory Galasco scorded, Connor Rodericks made 30 saves and Brian Belisle, Joe Giordano and Chris Jellison had assists for Conn (4-11-2, 2-8-2).

    Men's indoor track

    • Conn College senior Ben Bosworth, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 6 nationally in the mile, ran the second fastest time in school history (4:10.66) during the Terrier Classic at Boston University. Bosworth also qualified for the All-New England Championship, as did freshman Danny Aschale in the 3,000 (8:25.57). In addition, Austin DiMartino placed eighth in the heptathlon at the Tufts Stampede with 3,516 points.

    Women's indoor track

    • Conn College sophomore Shannon Kennedy broke a school record while placing fourth in the pentathlon at the Tufts Stampede in Medford, Mass. Kennedy finished with 2,905 points, 328 more than the previous school record. She also broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles (9.67 seconds). Shannon's sister Lauren placed fifth in the shot put (40 feet, 6 inches). Conn also competed in the Terrier Classic at Boston University with senior Bella Franz running the second fastest time among Division III runners in the 800 (2:12.98).
