Local roundup: ECC boys' basketball semifinals are Saturday
Waterford — The Eastern Connecticut Conference boys' basketball tournaments continue Saturday with semifinals at Waterford High School.
Play begins with the two Division II semifinals. No. 3 Windham (12-9) meets No. 7 Killingly (9-13) at noon and No. 1 Plainfield (19-2) faces No. 4 St. Bernard (9-12) at 2 p.m. Windham and Killingly did not meet in the regular season. ECC Division III champion Plainfield beat St. Bernard twice, but needed overtime for a 65-51 win on Feb. 14.
The Division I semifinals feature No. 2 Ledyard (17-3) playing No. 6 East Lyme (12-9) at 4:30 p.m. East Lyme beat Ledyard 71-52 on Dec. 23 in the second game of the season for both teams, but Ledyard avenged the loss with a 79-42 win on Feb. 1. The final game has No. 1 Waterford (18-3) hosting No. 4 New London (14-6) at 6:30 p.m. The teams did not meet in the regular season. The Division I semifinals will both be carried by GameDay at theday.com, with pregame shows beginning 15 minutes before each game.
Five honored by CHSCA
• Five local coaches were named coach of the year in their respective sports by the Connecticut High School Coaches' Association and will be honored at the organization's 53rd Annual Coaches' Recognition Dinner on May 11 at the Aqua Turf Club.
Being recognized are Montville's Phil Orbe (former baseball coach), Waterford's Ralph DiSaia (boys' tennis), Montville's Tim Egan (boys' track), Ledyard's Jim Buonocore (former football coach) and East Lyme's Phil Schneider (girls' lacrosse).

Men's basketball
• Tyrei Randall scored 24 points as St. Thomas More beat Army Prep 65-43. Maceo Jack scored 13, Nick Macarchuk had five assists and Randall had four assists and six rebounds for T-More (23-10).
College baseball
• Mitchell College opened its season with a 7-5 loss to Rutgers-Camden in the Armstrong Invitational at Fayetteville, N.C. Mitchell, which led 4-0 after two innings, got three hits each from Markus Melendez (double, triple) and Garet Griffin and Kyle Hartenstein had two hits.
College softball
• UConn lost twice at the Florida Atlantic tournament, losing 4-2 to No. 22 Kentucky and 5-0 to Florida Atlantic. Taylor Townsend scored a run and drove in a run and Carli Cutler had an RBI single for UConn (2-4) against Kentucky.
College indoor track
• Coast Guard junior Darius Adams finished third in the long jump at the Open New England Championships at Boston. Adams earned All-New England honors with a jump of 22-11.25 and sophomore teammate Michael Frick was also All-New England with a third-place finish in the pole vault (14-11). Coast Guard's Brett Foster (1,000) and Jacob Pawlina (200) qualified for the finals. On the women's side, Coast Guard's Ashlee Johnson broke her school record in the 500 at 1:18.52, good for 12th place.
Men's hockey
• Kasperi Ojantakanen had a pair of goals and an assist as UConn beat New Hampshire 5-3 in a Hockey East game. Adam Huska made 41 saves and Tage Thompson, Spencer Naas and Phillip Nyberg also scored for UConn (11-14-8, 7-10-4) and Naas had two assists.
H.S. boys' swimming
• Will Jarrett and Jordan Legg two events each as Williams School finished its season with a third-place finish in the four-team Providence Cup on Thursday. Jarrett won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and Legg won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Cyrus D'Arcy won the 100 breaststroke with a personal best 1:08.34 and the team of Jarrett, Legg, D'Arcy and Joe Sullivan won the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays, setting a school record in the freestyle at 1:36.45. Amar Viswanathan had personal-best times and second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and Sullivan was second in the 200 individual medley.
H.S. girls' swimming
• Alessandra D'Arcy led Williams School to a fourth-place finish at the five-team Providence Cup on Thursday. D'Arcy had personal-best times in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle and finished second in both events. Her 1:07.08 in the butterfly set a school record. Teammate Grace Linhares was third in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
