    Old Lyme boys beat Morgan 5-4 in lacrosse opener

    Clinton — Matt Cushman scored four goals, including the tiebreaker early in the fourth quarter, as Old Lyme made new coach J.C. Flaherty's debut a success with a 5-4 victory over Morgan in a Shoreline Conference boys' lacrosse game on Saturday.

    It was the official opening day for the CIAC spring sports season.

    Ian Humphreys added a goal, goalie James Rollins made 14 saves and Henry Lahm picked up five ground balls.

    Jake Anselmo had three goals and one assist for Morgan.

    Girls' lacrosse

    • South Windsor spoiled Norwich Free Academy's season opener with a 19-7 non-conference win. Katie Kelly had three goals and an assist for the Wildcats while Jess Bryan scored twice and Lulu Potter and Kayley Ericson each scored once. Potter and Morgan Crawford combined for six saves in goal.

    College baseball

    • Zac Susi's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning lifted UConn to a 3-2 win over No. 16 East Carolina in an American Athletic Conference game. Ryan Radue picked up the win in relief and former Avery Point standout John Russell earned his ninth save of the season for the Huskies (15-9, 2-0). Former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski had his seven-game hitting streak snapped. Starter Wills Montgomerie allowed one run over seven innings with six strikeouts and one walk. 

    Women's lacrosse

    • Wheaton scored seven goals in the opening 15 minutes and cruised to an 11-4 win over Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Cecelia Hosley, Mystic's Daria McKenna, Niki Kirchner-Hope and Anna McGoldrick each scored a goal for the Bears (3-7, 0-2) and Lydia VanWinkle added an assist. Wheaton is 5-4, 2-0.

    Men's lacrosse

    • No. 2 Tufts beat Connecticut College 12-6 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Jackson Kleintz scored four goals, Tucker Mscisz had a goal and an assist and Ben Parens was 15-for-22 in faceoffs with five ground balls for Conn (4-4, 1-3). Danny Murphy had two goals and three assists for Tufts (9-0, 4-0).

    Women's tennis

    • Aleksandra Drljaca won at No. 1 singles to break a 4-4 tie and lead Conn College to a 5-4 win over Mount Holyoke. Drljaca beat Ayame Yazawa 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Emily Migliorini, Stephanie Simon and Susanna Studwell won their matches for Conn as did the No. 2 doubles team of Angelica Warren and Mariah Warren.

    Conn (6-2) finished the day with an 8-1 win over Smith College. Drljaca, Migliorini, Mariah Warren, Adrienne Sieverding and Studwell won their matches in straight sets.
