    Local roundup: Old Lyme wins on Kane's no-hitter

    Haddam — Matt Kane pitched a no-hitter as Old Lyme remained unbeaten with a 3-2 win over Haddam-Killingworth in a Shoreline Conference baseball game on Friday.

    Kane (2-0) struck out 12 with one walk and worked around three errors in the sixth inning and a fourth in the seventh.

    Griffin Powers had two hits and drove in a run, Jeff Funaro doubled and drove in a run and Ron Losacano also had an RBI for the Wildcats (6-0, 6-0). The Cougars are 6-2, 4-2.

    College baseball

    • Timbo Duncan set Coast Guard's career home run record in a 15-8 loss to WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Duncan hit his 16th homer in the third inning, a three-run shot that was his eighth of the season. Pawcatuck's Brendan McNeil had an RBI double and an RBI single for Coast Guard (12-17, 3-8) while Will Stevens had three hits and Duncan added an RBI single. Gregg McHenry, a 1988 graduate, hit 15 homers. 

    • Avery Point beat Holyoke Community College 10-0 on a mercy rule. The game ended on Mike Chiovitti's solo homer with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mystic's Cooper Robinson had two hits and Mike DeRosa drove in three runs for the Pointers (15-9). Joe Nemchek (3-1) picked up the win. 

    • Mitchell College lost to Elms 7-2 in a New England Collegiate conference game on Thursday night. Jack Finnegan and Markus Melendez had two hits each and former NFA standout Brody Adams scored twice for Mitchell (17-8, 6-2). 

    College softball

    • Coast Guard was swept by MIT in a NEWMAC doubleheader, losing the opener 1-0 and the second game 6-1. Courtney McKenna had two hits in the opener for Coast Guard (13-15, 1-11) and Audrey Bartz had their only hit in the second game, a single in the sixth inning that scored Waterford's Claire Hurley.

    Men's tennis

    • Connecticut College lost to No. 13 Amherst 8-1 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match. Johnny Cissel and Patrick Farrell won at No. 3 doubles for Conn (4-7, 0-4).

    Women's track

    • Coast Guard’s Kristina Bynum broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, four inches to win the event as the Bears scored 131 points to beat Springfield (129) and WPI (124). Caroline Jenkins, Sarah Cummings, Molly Yuan and Anna Beck broke the school record in the 4x100 relay (50.59) to place second. Coast Guard’s individual winners were Bonny Turnage (1,500, 4:59.66), Adora Lawrence (400, 1:00.68), Gabrielle Troise (shot put, 12.10 meters), and Jenkins (100 hurdles, 16.27)

    Men's track

    • Justin Jezuit won both the discus (43.40 meters) and hammer (46.54) as Coast Guard scored 124 to place second in a tri-meet with WPI (166) and Springfield (95). Miquel Moroles, Raeford Penny, Alex Jung and Jacob Pawlina set the school record in the 4x100 relay (42.58) and finished second. Casey Dieter-Leeds, Caleb Patton, Jacob Panning and Jacob McGlumphy won the 4x400 relay (3:42.50). Nick Frystack (200, 22.07), Brett Foster (800, 1:56.89), Michael Frick (pole vault, 4.55 meters), Darius Adams (long jump, 7.07) and James Rimmele (3,000 steeplechase, 9:53.77) also won for the Bears. Pawlina also took second in the 200 (22.11).
