Avery Point ousted from NJCAA World Series

Enid, Okla. — Avery Point's season came to a sudden end, as the Pointers were eliminated from the NJCAA Division II World Series with a 12-2 loss to Kankakee (Ill.) on Monday.

The game ended after five innings on a mercy rule. And the game started just 12 hours after the Pointers were handed their first loss in the double-elimination tournament, an 8-5 loss to Parkland (Ill.) in a game that started on Sunday and ended early Monday morning.

Kankakee, which lost to Avery Point 11-9 in Saturday's opener, scored four runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead and added five runs in the third for a 10-1 lead. Mike Savino singled and tripled for the Pointers (30-16). Gavin Weyman, who earned the save in Saturday's game, took the loss. Waterford's Justin Keating had a sacrifice fly and Mystic's Cooper Robinson singled and scored a run.

In Sunday's game, Mike Chiovitti and Vinny Pallisco homered for the Pointers and Chiovitti, who was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, also doubled. Mike Corso, who doubled, and Tom Caravetta had two hits each.

Dan Garafalo started for the Pointers and took the loss, giving up four earned runs and six hits over five innings. Former NFA standout Andy Grant pitched the final three innings, allowing no earned runs and one hit over three innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Four of Parkland's run were unearned, thanks to four Avery Point errors.
