Local roundup: UConn-Villanova to renew men's basketball rivalry

The UConn men's basketball schedule is coming together in impressive fashion.

The most recent non-conference additions include one familiar and one new opponent.

UConn announced Thursday that it has agreed to a three-game series with former Big East Conference foe Villanova.

Monmouth, which went 27-7 overall, won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular championship and earned an NIT bid last season, will face UConn for the first time on Dec. 2, according to the Asbury Park Press. The Huskies will serve as host at a site yet to be announced.

The two non-conference foes will strengthen an already tough non-conference schedule that includes trips to Arizona and Auburn and a neutral site game against Syracuse in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Huskies also will participate in the PK80 tournament in Portland, Ore., facing 2017 Final Four participant Oregon in the opener and either Michigan State or Georgetown in the second round.

UConn and Villanova will start the series next Jan. 20 at the XL Center in Hartford. The Huskies and Wildcats, who've won two of the last four national championships, will meet at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 22, 2018. The final game will be Jan. 18, 2020 at the Wells Fargo Center, one of Villanova's home courts, in Philadelphia.

The two teams last met during the 2014 NCAA tournament with UConn winning the second round game, 77-65, in Buffalo on the way to capturing the program's fourth national championship. The Huskies trail in the overall series, 33-31.

"We are very excited to renew our series with Villanova, and especially pleased to be able to play one of the games in the tremendous basketball atmosphere of Madison Square Garden," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said in a release. "We have had so many memorable games against Villanova over the years and coach (Jay) Wright obviously has one of the very best programs in the country. I know our fans will be thrilled to see the Wildcats back on our schedule."

While UConn is coming off a disappointing 16-17 season, Villanova earned its fifth straight NCAA tournament bid last season. The Wildcats won the national championship in 2016 and posted a 149-31 overall record in the last five years.

"This series honors the great tradition of Villanova and Connecticut basketball," Wright said in a release. "Facing UConn was always a challenge and will be again. Coach Ollie was one of the toughest and smartest players in Big East history and he instills those same qualities in his team."

UConn's entire non-conference schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
