Local roundup: Tigers beat ValleyCats for second straight road series win
Troy, N.Y. — Blake Bortles had three hits, drove in a run and scored another to lead the Connecticut Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Wednesday.
The Tigers (14-12) took two out of three games from Tri-City, their second straight road series win, and return home from a 4-2 road trip on Thursday to play the Brooklyn Cyclones — a Single-A affiliate of the New York Met — on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Dylan Rosa broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when his doubled scored Bortles, and Rosa scored moments later on a base hit by Randel Alcanatara. Bortles singled hom Ro Coleman an inning later for the final run and the Connecticut pitching staff did the rest.
Dane Myers, Jhonny Mateo, Clate Schmidt and Wladamir Pinto combined to pitch a four hitter with Mateo (1-1) earning the win and Pinto picking up his fourth save.
State Legion tournament
• Alex Petchark's bases-clearing double capped a five-run seventh inning that broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Waterford to a 6-1 victory over Tolland in Game 1 of their best-of-three Connecticut American Legion baseball tournament third round series. Waterford had a chance to sweep the Zone 8 champs and advance to the Bristol Regional final on Saturday, but Game 2 was not completed before deadline. Petchark was also the winning pitcher, pitching a complete game six-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts. Robert Silva went 3-for-3, Justin Keating 2-for-4 and Kevin Johnson drove in two runs for Waterford, the Zone 6 runnerup.
Schooners fall
• The Mystic Schooners were held to six hits in a 4-2 loss to the Ocean State Wave in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Brian Rey (Miami Dade) and Ryan Soloman (Northeastern) homered for the Schooners (17-16). Mystic starter Steven Theetge (Bryant) took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Justin Cashman (Hartford) allowed one hit and one run over three innings with six strikeouts and one walk.

• Ken Olszewski hit for the first cycle in the Eastern Connecticut Major League as the Panera Pirates beat Northeast Nine 10-2. Bryce Bedard singled and doubled, Tony LaLima had two hits and Sean Donnelly drove in two runs for the Pirates. Cody Jones got the win, allowing one hit over five innings with four strikeouts and two walks.
SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth
• East Lyme White defeated Waterford Blue 8-1 on Tuesday night as winning pitcher Peter Tauro allowed just one run over six innings while striking out four. Liam McCarthy had a triple, single and two runs scored for East Lyme (4-4) and Cully Moore doubled home a run. Waterford Blue is 4-2-1.
Sutera tournament (11-12)
• Isaiah Anderson doubled twice to help lead Groton to a 3-2 win over Salem/Bozrah in the Gene Sutera Baseball Tournament. Gavin Casagrande was the winning pitcher and Rey Hidalgo of Groton had two hits and cut down the potential tying run with a throw to catcher Anthony Medina in the fifth inning.
Sutera tournament (9-10)
• Winning pitcher Luke Chapman struck out seven over three innings as Montville beat Salem/Bozrah 14-6. Aidan Johnson singled and tripled, Camren Payne had two hits and Jayden Burell tripled for Montville. Salem/Bozrah pitcher Logan Deshefy pitched three innings and turned a double play with the bases loaded to end an inning.
• Griffin Pollard and Hayden Chappel combined to strike out nine as Mystic beat Waterford Blue 7-2. Tomas Rogers had two hits for Mystic. Waterford's Cooper Sheehan allowed one run in relief over three innings.
