Local roundup: Surging Schooners clinch NECBL playoff berth

Groton — The Mystic Schooners are on a roll. And it couldn't come at a better time.

The defending New England Collegiate Baseball League champions won their seventh straight game, beating the New Bedford Bay Sox 3-0 on Wednesday night to wrap up its fifth straight playoff berth, the longest such streak in the league.

Steven Theetge (Bryant) pitched five shutout innings for the win. Theetge (1-0) allowed two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Mike Appel (Central Connecticut) allowed one hit over three innings and Theetge's Bryant teammate Logan Lessard pitched the ninth for his third save. The shutout was Mystic's 10th this season, breaking the NECBL mark of nine set by the Torrington Twisters featuring Stephen Strasburg in 2003.

"Pitchers have settled into their roles,'' said Schooners manager Phil Orbe. "A lot of these pitchers weren't starters for their colleges teams. It's been really fun to watch these guys under the tutelage of (pitching coach) Dennis (Long).''

The Schooners (24-16) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. John Trousdale (Alabama) doubled home Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall), who opened the inning with a double. Trousdale also led off the eighth with a double and scored when Ryan Soloman (Northeastern) followed with his fifth home run of the season. Andruw Gazzola (Stony Brook) had two hits for Mystic.

    Black Wolves sign Kirk

    • The New England Black Wolves have signed goalie Evan Kirk to a new two-year deal, although no terms were released. Kirk, the No. 6 overall picked in the 2011 National Lacrosse League entry draft by the then Minnesota Swarm, has been a member of the Black Wolves since 2014. He was 8-7 in 2017 and led the NLL with a 676 saves, a franchise record breaking the old mark of 620 he set the previouis season.

    ECML

    • Devin Robbins pitched five strong innings for the win as the Panera Pirates beat the Three Rivers Sonics 8-1 in the Eastern Connecticut Major League. Robbins allowed three hits and a run with seven strikeouts and one walk. Eric Somers pitched the last two innings, allowing no hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Brian McGugan was 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBI and Bryce Bedard had two hits and scored three runs for the Pirates.

    Tigers win

    • Will Savage's third hit of the game, an RBI single in the top of the 11th inning, lifted the Connecticut Tigers to a 7-6 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades in a New York-Penn League game on Tuesday night. Cole Peterson opened the 11th with a single, advanced to third when the ball was misplayed, and scored on Savage's single. The Tigers (16-16) led 4-2 after eight innings, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

    Sutera tournament (9-10)

    • Jonah Korinek had two hits and scored three times as Mystic beat Montville 15-5 in a semifinal on Tuesday. Luke Champagne of Montville doubled.

    • Waterford won the other semifinal on Tuesday, beating Groton 20-13. Brady Sutman drove in three runs, Matt Gonet drove in two runs and scored twice and Dylan Mathis singled and tripled for Waterford. Dom Zuliani had a single and a triple for Groton.
