    Local roundup: Tigers fall to the Muckdogs 3-2

    Norwich — The Connecticut Tigers lost to the Batavia Muckdogs 3-2 in a New York-Penn League baseball game on Sunday at Dodd Stadium.

    Batavia (19-32) collected 11 hits, including nine off Tigers starter Ryan Castellanos (4-4) in the first six innings.

    The Tigers, trailing 2-0, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Colby Bortles led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Jordan Pearce and scored on Cameron Warner's single. Reynaldo Rivera's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth accounted for Connecticut's other run. Warner and Rivera had two hits each for the Tigers (24-25).

    The Tigers are off the next two days for the league's all-star break and resume play on Wednesday with a doubleheader at the Staten Island Yankees which starts at 5 p.m. The Yankees will host the Tigers in single games on Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m. 

    Men's soccer

    • UConn lost to host Rutgers 1-0 in an exhibition game. Dante Perez scored in the 77th minute for Rutgers, which is coached by former UConn star Dan Donigan. Scott Levene and Austin Aviza combined for four saves for UConn, which hosts North Carolina State in an exhibition game Saturday at 7 p.m.

    Women's soccer

    • UConn fell in an exhibition game, losing 2-1 to the Boston Breakers Reserves at Storrs. Hayley Bowd broke a 1-1 tie with her goal with six seconds left in the game. Former UConn player Riley Houle — who played at Windham High School — also scored for the Breakers. Freshman Zoe Steck scored for UConn, with Melina Couzis assisting. UConn opens the regular season at Syracuse on Aug. 21. 

    Speedbowl

    • Waterford's Rob Janovic Jr. picked up his first victory of the season, winning the 35-lap SK Modifieds race on Saturday night at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl. The Speedbowl veteran held off Kyle James for the win, while Keith Rocco was third.

    "The car wasn't good at all tonight, I had to make sure I hit all of my marks,'' said Janovic in a release. "The last lap we got together it was more of me backing into (James) than him tapping me.''

    Ted Christopher won the 100-lap Valenti Modified Racing Series event in dominating form. James was second and Sammy Rameau finished third. Other winners included Dana DiMatteo (SK Lites), Avery Stoehr (NEMA Midgets), Dylan Duhaime (NEMA Lites), Ryan Tidman (ATQ Midgets) and Timmy Jedrzejek (ISMA Modifieds).
