    Local roundup: NFA edges Ledyard in boys' soccer

    Norwich — Nathan Cherenzia assisted on both goals as the Norwich Free Academy boys' soccer team held off Ledyard 2-1 Thursday in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I game.

    Alex Jacobik gave NFA a 1-0 lead three minutes in and Shayne Evans gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with two minutes left in the second half. Chris Charette got Ledyard on the scoreboard with one minute left.

    Ryan Godino made six saves for NFA (1-2-1, 1-1-1). Jack Woodruff had an assist and Ken Turner made four saves for Ledyard (3-1, 1-1).

    In other games:

    • Montville and Bacon Academy played to a 1-1 tie in double-overtime in an ECC Division II matchup. Montville's Ethan Rose scored in the 13th minute to give the Indians the lead before Bacon's Alec Sotomayor evened the game with a goal in the 33rd minute. Jose Zuniga made eight saves for Montville (2-2-1, 0-2-1).

    • Brent Rutchick scored one goal and set up the game-winner as Waterford rallied for a 2-1 win over Killingly in an ECC Division II game. Rutchick's unassisted goal in the first half tied the score at 1-1 before he assisted on Robbie Negahan's goal in the 60th minute. Goalie Alex Fayan made six saves for the Lancers (2-2, 2-1).

    • East Lyme remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win over Fitch in an ECC Division I game. Alec Kosinski, Jack Seibel and Lucas Wojcik scored goals and Matt Kung, Duncan Manthous and Nick Esposito had assists for East Lyme (2-0-2, 2-0-1). Wes Jacey made six saves for Fitch (2-3-1, 1-2).

    • Kevin Vazquez had a goal and an assist as Grasso Tech beat Norwich Tech 3-0 in a Connecticut Technical Conference game. Allen Munton and Kevin Duarte had second-half goals, breaking a 1-1 tie. Joel Potter made five saves for Grasso (2-3, 1-1). Kevin Porras scored a goal and Don Duca made 10 saves for Norwich Tech (0-5, 0-2). 

    • Wheeler lost to Plainfield 3-0 in an ECC Division III game. Bowen Baker made six saves for Wheeler (1-3, 1-1), which gave up all the goals in the first half.

    • Mason Rubino scored twice, leading Griswold to a 3-1 win over St. Bernard in an ECC Division III game. Jack O'Leary scored and Martin Arvidson made 12 saves for St. Bernard (0-5, 0-4).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Miranda Arruda scored twice in the second half as Stonington beat Woodstock Academy 4-1 in an ECC game. Daisy Williams and Trinity Lennon also had goals for the Bears (4-0, 4-0), Erin Craig had a pair of assists and Aliza Bell made nine saves in goal.

    • Caroline Healy scored both East Lyme goals in a 2-1 win over Fitch/Ledyard in an ECC game. Morgan Crandall and Kristen Healy had assists for East Lyme (2-3, 2-1). Zoe Pearse had the goal for Fitch/Ledyard (1-4, 1-3).

    College field hockey

    • Jamie Navoni scored three goals as Connecticut College beat Roger Williams 4-0. Meghan Lembo had a goal and Kaja Hartwell and Berklee Vaillancourt had assists for Conn (2-4).  

    College volleyball

    • Coast Guard Academy won the fifth game 15-6 to pull out a 3-2 win over Merchant Marine. Coast Guard won 25-21, 25-7 for a 2-0 lead before losing 25-18, 25-13. Angelou Dunton hit .344, had 16 kills and 11 digs, Bridget Boyle had nine kills and 11 digs, Michelle McGill had 13 digs and Makenna Martin 24 assists for Coast Guard (9-3).

    • Wesleyan beat Conn College 25-13, 25-22, 25-13 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference match. Katia Elisman had 19 assists, Sam Hunter had eight digs and Emma Hewlin had seven kills for Conn (6-3, 0-3).

    • Westfield State beat Mitchell College 25-7, 25-9, 25-11. Courtney Cappabianca had 13 digs for Mitchell (0-7).

    H.S. volleyball

    • Coginchaug beat Old Lyme 25-10, 25-11, 25-8 in a Shoreline Conference match. Taylor Thompson had four kills and two blocks for Old Lyme (0-6, 0-5). 

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Wheeler senior Teddy Nosiku won his first race as the Lions beat Windham 21-36 and Griswold 23-34 in an ECC Division III tri-meet. Nosiku won with a time of 18:44. Wheeler (3-0, 3-0) got a fifth-place finish from Michael Carroll (20:22) and teammate Ethan Smith was sixth (20:32).

    • Norwich Tech lost to University in a CTC meet 22-36. Cody Kersteter of Norwich Tech finished third in a time of 20:55. Norwich Tech (1-1) got a fifth-place finish from Nate Turner (21:17) and teammate Kyle Hack (21:20) was sixth.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Norwich Tech lost to University in a CTC meet 15-50. Syeare Thomas was the top finisher for Norwich Tech (0-2), coming in fifth at 29:33.

    • Wheeler split an ECC Division III tri-meet, beating Windham 15-50 and losing to Griswold 23-34. Miranda Mullen of Griswold won the race in 24:08 and Brittney Riggins of Wheeler (1-2, 1-2) was second at 25:04.

    H.S. girls' swimming

    • Waterford beat Lyman/Windham 73-53 in an ECC meet. Jayne Darras, Viviana Martinez, Sophia Podeszwa and Ella Dyjack won events for Waterford (3-2, 3-2) and teammates Elyse Gathy, Erin Patten, Molly Reagan and Sophia Kasem-Beg won the 200 medley relay.
