    Local roundup: CGA freshman Mooney wins New England cross country title

    Gorham, Maine — Kaitlyn Mooney's magical season continued Saturday as the Coast Guard Academy freshman captured the New England Division III women's cross country championship at the University of Southern Maine.

    Mooney, who has won five of her first six collegiate races, broke her own school record by over a minute, finishing the 6K course in 20 minutes, 22 seconds to beat Amherst College senior Nicky Roberts by nine seconds.

    "We all thought it was going to be a lot colder than it was and we prepared for the worst," said Mooney, who helped the Bears finish 13th overall in the team race with 401 points. "I'm excited for NCAAs. I don't really have any goals. I just want to run with some fast girls and get experience for the next few years."

    Mooney will compete in the Division III national championship race next Saturday in Elsah, Illinois.

    "Today was an exciting day for Coast Guard cross country," Bears coach Ethan Brown said. "The entire women's team had a lot of energy and everyone had a great day. Kaitlyn helped lead the charge and everyone fed off that. She saw some great competition today and we're getting closer to seeing her full potential this season.

    "I'm really looking forward to seeing her race on the national stage"

    Junior Anita Green was second runner across the line for the Bears finishing in 55th place (22:35). Other point scorers for Coast Guard were senior Rachel Burchill (87th, 23:11.5), junior Nina Ragle (117th, 23:38.8) and sophomore Kirsten Carson (142nd, 23:54.4).

    Conn College finished 14th in the meet and were led by Meredith Cronin, who placed 54th in 22:33.7. Also for scoring for Camels were Eva Brydson in 60th (22:39.5), Grace Sheeran in 103rd (23:23.3), Tarvis Hintlian in 106th (23:24.6) and Micaela Nee in 122nd (23:40.1).

    Men's cross country

    • Conn College junior Scott Mason finished second to help the Camels placed seventh among 54 schools at the New England Championship meet at Southern Maine. Mason finished the 8K course in 25:24.3, only two seconds behind individual champion Sam Brunnette of Plymouth State. Sophomore Danny Ashale also earned All-New England recognition for Conn by placing 13th in 25:45.3. MIT beat Amherst 81-81 for the team title and Conn finished with 218 points. Also for Conn, senior Connor Trapp was 47th (26:21), junior Price Day was 75th (26:48.5) and junior Russell Adam 81st (26:53.7).

    • Coast Guard placed 21st with 601 points. The Bears' top finisher was junior Colton Atkinson in 86th place (26:58.1) followed by sophomore Jacob Panning (120th,27:33.6), junior Alex Kearney (123rd, 27:35.9) and sophomore Andre Gallant (136th, 27:52).

    College field hockey

    • Top-seeded and unbeaten UConn defeated Boston University 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament in Storrs. The Huskies (20-0) will play Penn State, a 2-1 overtime winner of Delaware, in Sunday's quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Charlotte Veitner scored two goals for UConn while Amanda Collins also scored for the Huskies and added an assist.

    H.S. cross country

    • Montville junior Mady Whittaker finished 97th out of 258 runners at the New England Championship meet in Belfast, Maine. The Eastern Connecticut Conference champion set a personal best in the 5K with a time of 19:47. She will complete her season on Nov. 26 at the Foot Locker Eastern Regional Championships at Van Cortland Park in New York. In the boys' race, Ledyard's Zak King overcame a fall at the start of the race and battled back to finish in 126th place in 17:06.

    H.S. football

    • Valley Regional/Old Lyme outscored Lewis Mills 28-0 in the second half en route to a 35-3 win in Burlington. The Warriors (8-1, 6-1 Sassacus) can qualify for the Class S tournament with a win next week over Haddam-Killingworth. Quarterback Michael Cullina was 13 of 19 for 287 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for Valley/Old Lyme, while Ernest Jean-Pierre hauled in five passes for 109 yards.

    • Prince Tech overcame a 12-6 halftime deficit to defeat Thames River 36-20 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. The loss snapped the Crusaders' three-game winning streak. Thames River (4-4, 4-4) scored on JoJo Beltran's 80-yard kickoff return, and touchdown runs by Albert Velasquez (31 yards) and Trey Stimson (9 yards). Velasquez also ran for a two-point conversion.

    Men's basketball

    • Mass Bay Community outlasted Avery Point 115-112. Tyrel Martinez had 33 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Pointers whle Jacee Hamlin added 26 points and eight assists, Steven Fletcher had 19 points and Nick Fersch had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

    Women's basketball

    • Hostos Community College of the Bronx handed Avery Point its first loss, 101-94, in Groton. Mia Brennan led the Pointers (2-1) with 22 points and four assists while Tatyana LaFrance-Boyce added 21 points, Meagan Bianchi had 13 points and 12 assists, Edona Thaqi had 13 points and Egypt Santos finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
