    Local roundup: Coast Guard's Aeberli goes 4-0 at New England Duals

    Providence — Coast Guard Academy sophomore A.J. Aeberli went 4-0 as the Bears finished fourth in the New England Wrestling Association Duals on Sunday.

    Coast Guard (7-5) beat Rhode Island College 51-0 and Wesleyan 23-22 before losing to No. 4 Johnson & Wales 31-6 in the semifinals and No. 16 WPI 22-15 in the third-place match. Johnson & Wales won the title.

    Aeberli, ranked ninth in Division III at 174 pounds, won two matches by decision, another on a technical fall and also notched a major decision. Jonathan Wagner (184/197) was 3-0, Chris Sullivan went 2-0 at 157 and Nick Remke (165) finished 3-1.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College placed four players in double figures in a 71-56 win over Lesley in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Dejia Santana had 17 points and eight rebounds, Francesca Pinard had 14 points and eight rebounds, Ashleigh Beauford scored 18, Allegra Jones scored 12 and Kate McCormack had nine steals and six assists for the Mariners (8-9, 7-2). Theresa Pereira came off the bench for a game-high 22 points for Lesley (2-13, 2-5).

    H.S boys' soccer

    • Jose Zuniga, a senior at Montville High School, was given the Keith Johnson Adversity Award at the Connecticut Soccer Coaches Association all-state banquet in Southington. The honor is given annually to a state high school boys' soccer player. It is given to a player who has overcome great adversity in life while continuing to persevere and play the game of soccer.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • East Lyme lost to Weaver in a nonleague game on Saturday, 67-60. Katie Durkee and Nadia Tarhini had 14 points each and Sophie Dubreuil and Megan Bauman scored 11 each for East Lyme (9-4).

    H.S. hockey

    • The Eastern CT Eagles played to a 3-3 tie with host Mt. Everett, Mass., on Saturday night. The Eagles led 3-1 with two minutes to go before Mt. Everett scored then got the game-tying goal with 24 seconds left after pulling its goalie. Ryan Huta and Kevin Close had a goal and assist each, Rylin Fowler made 18 saves, Evan Tower had two assists, Quentin Dean had a goal and Kyle Jacobson and Jake Verbridge had assists for the Eagles (6-1-1). 

    College men's hockey

    • UConn beat No. 10 Providence 3-1 in a Hockey East game on Saturday night. Johnny Austin and Joseph Masonius had power-play goals and Maxim Letunov iced the win with an empty-net goal as UConn snapped a five-game losing streeak. Tanner Creel made 26 saves for UConn (9-16-2, 6-11-1).

    H.S. wrestling

    • New London went 2-1 in a tri-meet on Friday, beating South Windsor 39-36 and Shelton 60-18 before losing to host Middletown 39-37. Xavier Alvarez (182 pounds), Jacob Commander (195) and Noah Kimball (220) were each 3-0 for the Whalers (5-2).
