    Local roundup: CGA baseball team beats Mitchell 8-2

    New London — Senior Alex Murdoch's three-run double highlighted a six-run seventh inning as host Coast Guard Academy beat Mitchell College 8-2 in a non-conference baseball game between the two city rivals.

    It was Coast Guard's first win over Mitchell since 2013.

    Murdoch, the Bears' only senior playing in the final home game of his career, had a pair of hits while junior Will Stephens had the first four-hit game of his career as he went 4-for-4 with a double to give him 99 career hits.

    Stephens can become the first CGA player since 2012 to get 100 hits during his junior season if he gets one in the final game of the season on Wednesday against Emerson. Both Nolan Gallagher and Tyler Babkiewich got their 100th hits as juniors during the 2012 season.

    Luke Thompson added three hits for the Bears (10-18), his seventh game this season with three or more hits, while Alex Cordes added a pair of hits.

    Freshman Lukas Caskey (2-1) pitched five shutout innings for Coast Guard, allowing just four hits while walking two and striking out one to get the win.

    Jeff Nicolosi pitched four scoreless innings as the Mitchell starter, one of eight pitchers for the Mariners (21-7). Eric Marriott had two of Mitchell's six hits.

    In other games:

    • Avery Point completed a perfect 5-0 weekend by sweeping a doubleheader from Northern Essex 10-8 and 13-7. Waterford's Mike Rocchetti led the Pointers (21-9-1) in the second game by going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. He also drove in two runs in the opener. Anthony Socci added two hits and three RBI while Waterford's Alex Petchark had two hits and two RBI in the second game. In the opener, Omar Montalvo was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Michael Savino had two hits and scored twice as Avery Point scored six runs in the sixth to rally from an 8-4 deficit. Jordan Warecki got the win, allowing no earned runs and only four hits in 4.2 innings or relief.

    • No. 24 UConn claimed its third-straight American Athletic Conference series by defeating Cincinnati 8-5. The Huskies (22-12-1, 7-5) outslugged the Bearcats despite missing their 3-4 hitters Zac Susi and Isaac Feldstein with injuries. Former Wheeler star Troy Stefanski had a two-run double for UConn to run his hitting streak to nine games. Tied 3-3 in the seventh, Conor Moriarty gave the Huskies the lead for good with a two-run double before Christian Fedko added a two-run single in the eighth to make it 7-3 and Mike Woodsorth hit a solo home run in the ninth.

    College softball

    • Bay Path swept a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Mitchell, winning the opener 6-4 and the second game 6-1. Italia Krick had a two-run double and Waterford's Megan Elphick an RBI single in the opener for the Mariners (11-17, 7-5), Krick singled and later scored on a base hit by Kaitlin Thibideau-Corey to score Mitchell's only run of the second game.

    Women's tennis

    • Stephanie Simon teamed up with Aleksandra Drljaca to earn a doubles point and then keyed a comeback in singles action to help Connecticut College upset No. 28 Trinity 5-4 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (3-7, 1-4) trailed 4-3 with two singles match when Simon rallied for a three-set win at No. 3 singles and Emily Migliorini won a three-set match at No. 2 singles for Conn to win the match. Conn picked up two other singles wins by Rachel Weiss and Hayley Zukerberg.

    Men's tennis

    • Trinity defeated Conn College 6-3 in the NESCAC. The Camels picked up wins from Henry DeCoster and Patrick Farrell in singles along with the doubles team of Johnny Cissel-Charlie Williams.

    Road racing

    • Niantic's Peter Kruse was the overall winner while Clinton's Sybil Shapiro won the women's division in the Niantic Bay Boardwalk 5K. Kruse won in 17:17 while Shapiro finished seventh overall in the 19:09. The top 10 also included East Lyme's Justin Scott (second, 18:22), Niantic's Chris Merrifield (third, 18:45), Bolton's Brendan Tierney (fourth, 18:59), Boston's Mitch Westwood (fifth, 19:02), East Lyme's Tom Provencher (sixth, 19:08), Shapiro, Glastonbury's Krystian Pawloski (ninth, 19:10) and East Lyme's Brandon Dinsmore (10th, 19:26.)

    H.S. softball

    • Alexis Michon pitched a four-inning no-hitter as Montville beat Putnam 27-0 on Saturday. Maggie Wainwright had three hits and scored four runs and Abby Diamantini, Sydney Olsen and Michon had two hits each for Montville (5-2). Diamantini homered, scored three runs and drove in three runs, Olsen drove in five runs and Michon doubled and scored three times.
