    Local roundup: Lewis, Podeszwa take seconds at NE track

    Durham, N.H. — Norwich Free Academy's Allyson Lewis and Waterford's Sophia Podeszwa had the top local performance during the New England Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the University of New Hampshire.

    Lewis, the Class LL high jump champion, tied her own school record (5 feet, 9 inches) for second place while Podeszwa finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.94 seconds, trailing only fellow Eastern Connecticut Conference competitor Kall'Ana Botelho of Griswold, who won the race in 44.19.

    In other local girls' results, Norwich Free Academy's Paige Martin finished tied for fourth in the pole vault (10 feet, 9 inches), Fitch's Colleen Duffy broke her own school record while placing 13th in the discus (114-04), and the Falcons' 4x100 relay team of Lily Johnson, Madison Powe, Janaya Burley and Abigail Rogers placed 12th in 50.02.

    Among the local boys, Stonington's Cam Whalen placed fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.02 seconds) and 13th in the 300 intermediate hurdles (40.92) while teammates Rhys Hammond placed eighth in the 800 (1:55.74) and Joe Hinckley finished eighth in the pole vault (13-3). In other events, East Lyme's 4x800 boys' relay team of Sam Whittaker, Matthew Kung, Chris Abbey and Ryan McCauley placed 11th in 8:08.60, NFA's Chris Hebert finished 21st in the javelin (157-9) and Ledyard's Collin Wiltshire placed 8th in the triple jump (44.07.75).

    The top six finishers earned all-New England status (Lewis, Podeszwa, Martin and Whalen).

    H.S. golf

    • Chris Fosdick of Xavier the inaugural CIAC State Open, shooting a 4-under-par 67 at Old Lyme's Black Hall Club. Tyler Hahn of Avon was second with a 71 and Jack Boatwright of Fairfield Ludlowe was third at 73. Caroline Petchark of Waterford finished tied for 25th with an 88. 

    NECBL

    • The Mystic Schooners lost to the Danbury Westerners in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game, 11-10. Anthony Cruz (Quinnipiac) was 4-for-4, Mic Wilson (Stony Brook) homered and drove in two runs and Chris Winkel (UConn) had two hits and scored three runs for the Schooners (1-3). 

    American Legion baseball

    • Hendrik Khoury and Nate Whipple combined to pitch a five-inning, no-hitter as New London beat Norwich 12-2 on Friday night in the Zone 6 opener for both teams. Khoury struck out four over four innings for the win. Aaron Beeney was 2-for-2 with two walks and four runs scored, Bo Rodriguez had two hits and scored twice and Rob Otanez and Khoury drove in two runs each for New London.

    College basketball

    • Avery Point men's basketball coach Sam Cheung announced commitments from eight players to play for the Pointers next season, seven from the Eastern Connecticut Conference.

    John Domijan of Montville, Trevor Yeomans of Waterford, JR Gandenberger of East Lyme, Mitchell Holdmeyer of Valley Regional, NFA's Alec Gomes and Maloyid Perkins and New London's Ryan Dull and Devonte Wrighten are expected to play for the Pointers.
