    Local roundup: Groton/Mystic, Waterford to play for District 10 LL softball title

    Top seed Groton/Mystic and No. 2 Waterford picked up semifinal wins on Saturday and will face off in a best-of-three series for the District 10 Little League softball 11-12 title.

    The series, which will be played at the Waterford Little League complex on Gardiners Wood Road, begins with Game 1 on Sunday at 3 p.m. Game 2 in Monday at 6 p.m. and Game 3, if needed, on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

    Groton/Mystic beat No. 4 East Lyme 12-2 behind a complete game by Katie Tuohy, who struck out six. Grace Jenkins and Angelica Tompkins had multiple hits for Groton/Mystic. Abbie Robinson pitched five innings and Ava Roach had a hit for East Lyme.

    Waterford beat No. 3 Lyme/Old Lyme 19-1 in three innings. Winning pitcher Anna Dziecinny struck out five and was also 2-for-3. Zoe Zito doubled and drove in three runs for Waterford. Lyme/Old Lyme pitcher Hannah Johnston struck out four and teammates Alexis Fenton and Kaitlyn Ward had hits.

    Tigers lose

    • The Connecticut Tigers dropped their seventh straight, losing 8-4 to the Brooklyn Cyclones in a New York-Penn League baseball game. The Tigers (2-7) took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth but Brooklyn (7-2) scored five runs in the top of the ninth. Leadoff hitter Isrrael De La Cruz was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Hector Martinez homered and drove in two runs and Teddy Hoffman singled and doubled for the Tigers. 

    District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

    • East Lyme defeated New London 8-7 in the opening round of the District 6 Babe Ruth 14-year-old tournament at Veterans Field in Niantic. Matt Bradley had two hits and scored twice, Cannon Dean had two hits and two RBI, and Rowan Mundell and Thomas Peck each one hit and one RBI for East Lyme. Mundell, an outfielder, also threw out two runners, including one at home, while Alex Roth pitched 5.2 innings for the win and Nathan Licitra earned the save. Guiseppe Satti had a double and two RBI, Randy Vidal had two hits and two RBI and Kevin Mackinthrush had two hits for New London.

    District 10 LL baseball (8-10)

    • Montville defeated Waterford 17-8 as winning pitcher Luke Chapman allowed only two hits over four innings and Jack Treat was 3-for-5 with a double. Also for Montville, P.J. Evans, Eric Richmond and Cameron Payne had two hits apiece. Colby Sheehan and Cole Peckham had hits for Waterford.

    • East Lyme defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 11-0 in four innings as pitchers Nick Cambi, Aiden Cochrane and Andrew Sevigny combined to pitch a one-hitter with five strikeouts. Davis Fallon had a double for Lyme/Old Lyme.

    District 10 LL softball (8-10)

    • Groton/Mystic defeated Pawcatuck 26-6 as Katie MacPherson hit for the cycle with three RBI,  pitchers Emma Robinson and Hailey Merrill combined for 10 strikeouts and Maerin Lyon double and had four RBI. Gracelyn Smith had an RBI double for Pawcatuck while Mackenzie Griffith, Chelsea Riffe and Melanie Verbridge each had hits.

    • Waterford defeated East Lyme 13-1 as winning pitcher Ava Majeski had 11 strikeouts, Sophia Avon and Amelia Stoddard each had doubles. Brielle Kenney had single and RBI, and Paige Jessuck and Jenna Long scored two runs apiece. Mattie Barstow and Ashley Roach had hits for East Lyme.
