    Local roundup: Gennaro comes up a winner at Sailfest 5K

    New London — Paul Gennaro of New London won the Charter Oak Sailfest 5K Sunday, finishing the race in 15 minutes, 44 seconds to edge Westerly's Matthew Walker, who was second in 15:58. Chris Garvin of Kingston, R.I., was third in 16:17.

    Brandy LeClair of Groton was the top women's finisher in 18:51, followed by Shara Bousquet of Westerly in 19:53 and Celina Daigle of Burlington in 22:21.

    Rounding out the top 10 finishers overall were fourth, Tommy Bousquet of Westerly (17:13); fifth, Ryan Entrikin of New London (18:30); sixth, Kevin Rodriguez of Meriden (18:35); seventh, LeClair; eighth, Anthony Gontarz of East Lyme (19:12); ninth, Aidan Gallagher of Preston (19:18); and 10th, Jeffrey Vuono of Westerly (19:23).

    New York-Penn League

    • The Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Connecticut Tigers 7-5 in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium. The Tigers (14-5) had taken a 4-0 lead in the first on two-run single by Eric De La Rosa and RBI singles by Lukey Sherley and Ulrich Bojarski. Gresuan Silverio's RBI double in the second made it 5-0, but Connecticut was silenced the rest of the day. The rubber match of the three-game series will be at 7 p.m. Monday.

    CT Senior League softball (15-16)

    • Ledyard survived a late rally by Plainfield to win 9-8 in the winners' bracket final, advancing to Monday's championship game at Stankey Field in Orange (5:30 p.m.) Ledyard will play the winner of Sunday night's late game between Plainfield and Orange. Hannah Smith was the winning pitcher for Ledyard, striking out 10 and allowing just three earned runs. Smith also helped Ledyard to an early 8-1 lead, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Samantha Fancher had two hits and two runs scored and Jenna Topalis two hits and two RBI. Plainfield then mounted a seven-run attack to tie the score in the sixth. Shailynn Williams scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning and Ledyard outfielder Codee Carrol tracked down a deep fly ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to end it.

    CT LL softball (11-12)

    • Fairfield defeated Groton/Mystic 2-1 in Sunday's state championship round. Groton/Mystic would have had to beat Fairfield twice to take the title.

    Groton/Mystic advanced to the championship round by beating Seymour 5-1 Saturday. Katie Tuohy, Grace Jenkins, Sydney Lyon, Abriel Carey, Charlotte Cabral and Angelica Tompkins each contributed one of Groton/Mystic's six hits and Cabral earned the victory, allowing two hits and a run over six innings. She struck out six and walked none.

    CT Section 3 LL softball (9-10)

    • Madison defeated Groton/Mystic 12-2 to win the championship.

    CT Section 3 LL baseball (10-11)

    • Liam Joyce pitched a complete-game one-hitter and Mystic scored in each of the first four innings to top Glastonbury 6-0 in the losers' bracket final, earning a spot in the championship game Monday vs. Madison. Joyce struck out eight for the win, Hayden Chappel went 3-for-3 and Finn Eck added two hits and two runs scored. William Berard had a bunt single and JP Papadopoulos reached on a walk and slid to break up a double play, both contributing for Mystic.
