    Local roundup: Pagan selected for Puerto Rican National Team

    Barranquilla, Colombia — Former New London High School all-state selection India Pagan, The Day's 2017 All-Area Girls' Basketball Player of the Year, has been selected to play for the Puerto Rican National Team in the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games.

    Puerto Rico, playing in Group B, will compete from Friday through Tuesday in the eight-team tournament at Elias Chewing Coliseum. Following Thursday night's opening ceremony, the team is scheduled to square off with Guatemala on Friday, Barbados on Saturday, then Mexico on Sunday, with elimination rounds to follow.

    Last summer, Pagan was invited to compete for the Puerto Rican Junior National Team at the U19 FIBA women's World Cup in Italy.

    As a freshman at Stony Brook University in 2017-18, Pagan, a 6-foot-1 forward, then averaged 5.8 points and 3.6 assists in 17.9 minutes per game. She shot a team-best 54.5 percent (72-for-132) from the floor, making 15 total starts.

    As a senior at New London, Pagan led the Whalers to the Class LL championship and the state's No. 1 overall ranking, averaging 15.8 points and 15.8 rebounds per game in the state tournament. She was Most Outstanding Player as New London won the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament.

    Schooners fall

    • The Mystic Schooners lost to the Ocean State Waves in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game 10-4. Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) hit a two-run homer and Zachary Ardito (Hartford) hit a solo shot for the Schooners (19-16). 

    Tigers win

    • The Connecticut Tigers scored six runs in the top of the third inning and beat the Hudson Valley Renegades 9-5 in a New York-Penn League game on Wednesday night. Jeremiah Burks tripled, homered, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Tigers (16-16) and teammate Eric De La Rosa was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

    College honors

    • Mitchell College men's basketball players junior Domenico Santiago and senior Colizel Lewis were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must be a junior or senior and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

    Waterford Babe Ruth

    • Waterford opens plays in the New England 15-year-old tournament Friday against host Augusta, Maine. The game begins at 5 p.m. Waterford plays three games in pool play before the teams are seeded for single-elimination play.  

    DAZ tournament

    • North Stonington beat Pawcatuck 5-2 in the opening game of the Dominic A. Zuliani tournament on Wednesday in Groton, a tournament for Little League players ages 11-12. Kyle Kessler, who went 4.2 innings, combined with James Main to pitch a no-hitter. Kessler also homered and doubled. Pawcatuck pitcher Dylan Cemini allowed two hits with six strikeouts over four innings.
