    Local roundup: Waterford wins New England tourney opener

    Augusta, Me. — Trey Brennan had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI to help Waterford beat host Augusta, 10-5, on opening day of the New England Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament on Friday.

    Ryan O'Connell started and allowed two earned runs over four innings. Trevor D'Amico came in relief and allowed no runs over the final three innings, including getting out of bases-loaded jams in both the fifth and sixth innings with Waterford up one run.

    "We were cruising along pretty good, had the game in hand up 6-1," coach David Laffey said. "(Augusta) clawed back ... to make it 6-5, but Trevor only gave up one hit (in relief)."

    Waterford, which plays St. Johnsbury (Vt.) at 11 a.m. Saturday in pool play, scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break it open.

    O'Connell helped his cause with a double and run scored, while Robert Zawacki (two hits) and Sam Lanuza (double) scored a run and drove in another. 

    CT Section 3 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Madison rallied from an early 7-2 deficit to defeat Mystic 10-9 in an elimination game of the Connecticut Section 3 Little League (11-12) tournament at Rocky Hill. Madison will play Newington for the Section 3 title and a berth in the state final four on Saturday. Payton Neale had a big game for Mystic, the District 10 champion. He hit a three-run homer in the first and a two-run shot in the fifth that gave Mystic a 9-8 lead.

    New York-Penn

    • Jeremiah Burks singled home Sam McMillan with one out in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Connecticut Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Aberbeen IronBirds in the New York-Penn League. Gresaun Silverio had two of Connecticut's three hits while Yaya Chentouf pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth saves. The Tigers are 17-17.

    NECBL

    • Russell Smith (TCU) scattered four hits over six shutout inning as the Newport Gulls defeated the Mystic Schooners 7-1 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Zachary Ardito (Hartford) went 2-for-3 for the Schooners (19-17) and drove in their lone run with a base hit in the seventh inning. Newport is 17-17.

    UConn football

    • UConn center Ryan Crozier, a fifth-year senior, was named to the 2018 Rimington Trophy Watch List, an award presented annually to the best center in the country. The 6-foot-4, 294-pound Crozier started all 12 games in 2016 and the first three in 2017 before his season was cut short after due to a knee injury.
