Local roundup: Ocean State outlasts Schooners 10-8

Wakefield, R.I. — Ocean State's Sonny Ulliana hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to offset an early slam by Mystic's Matt O'Neill, and the Waves went on to defeat the Schooners 10-8 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Tuesday night.

O'Neill (Penn) had given Mystic a 4-0 lead with his blast in the second. He drove in five runs.

The Schooners (21-21) hold a slim half-game lead over the Newport Gulls (21-22) for the Southern Division's third and final playoff spot. The two teams play on Wednesday in Newport, R.I. The Gulls rallied for four runs in the ninth to beat the Sanford Mainers 10-7 on Tuesday.

    New York-Penn League

    • The Connecticut Tigers could muster only four hits during a 6-4 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium. Chance Kirby (2-2) pitched well in defeat, allowing only one earned run over six innings with four strikeouts. He retired 10 of the last 11 men he faced.

Wenceel Perez had an RBI single and Cam Warner a sacrifice fly in the third for the Tigers (21-21), who scored their final two runs on a throwing error in the eighth. Vermont is 21-23. The teams play for the final time this season on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
