    Local colleges: Hurley helps CGA women secure NEWMAC tourney bid

    New London — Claire Hurley scored a pair of goals in the second half as Coast Guard Academy defeated Clark 2-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's soccer match on Saturday to secure a berth in the conference tournament for the first time since 2014.

    It was the final regular-season home game for the Bears (8-6-1, 5-3-1), whose five NEWMAC wins is a program record.

    After a scoreless first half, Coast Guard struck quickly in the second half. The Bears were awarded a penalty kick only 3:37 into the half, and Hurley, a junior from Waterford, missed the kick, but scored off the rebound for her 20th career goal.

    Hurley would had an insurance goal in the 63rd minute when she took a pass from Felicia Lombardi and finished the play for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

    Freshman goalie Katharina Commins made four saves to record her fourth shutout.

    In other games:

    • Julia Patterson scored both goals as Bowdoin College defeated Connecticut College 2-0 in a the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (7-6-1, 2-6-1) are in a three-way tie for eighth-place and the final NESCAC tournament berth and can qualify by winning at Wesleyan on Tuesday in the regular-season finale.

    • Jennifer Wilson scored three goals as Bay Path defeated Mitchell College 7-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Jacquelyn White scored in the 17th minute for the Mariners (1-13, 0-8), her team-leading third of the season.

    Men's soccer

    • Conn College's chances of winning the NESCAC regular-seasoon title title took a major hit when Bowdoin scored off a corner kick in the second half to upset the No. 5 Camels 1-0. Conn (11-1-2, 6-1-2) now trails Tufts (7-0-2 in the NESCAC) with one regular-season match remaining. Conn visits Wesleyan and Tufts travels to Bowdoin, both on Tuesday.

    Bowdoin (9-3-2, 5-2-2) won its ninth straight by breaking through in the 68th minute when Matty McColl's corner kick was first headed by Levi Morant to Moctar Niang, who headed the ball into the net past Conn goalie A.J. Marcucci, who finished with four saves.

    • Abdou Mbacke Thiam's second goal of the game came in the 88th minute and lifted UConn to a 2-1 win over Temple in an American Athletic Conference game. Austin Aviza had an assist and made one save for UConn (9-2-2, 3-0-2).

    Field hockey

    • No. 11 Bowdoin cruised to a 4-0 victory over Conn College in the NESCAC. Freshman goalie Jackie Mountford made saves for the Camels (3-11-1, 0-9).

    Volleyball

    • Mitchell outlasted Newbury 3-2 in the NECC. Game scores were 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26 and 15-5 as the Mariners (3-14, 2-5) close things out by capturing 13 of the final 14 points in the fifth game. Laurissa Amaker led Mitchell with a career-high 20 kills and 23 digs whle Ariana Carter added 13 kills and three blocks, Cameron Childs 45 assists and Shyla Phillips-Krick 41 digs.

    • Conn College split a pair of non-conference matches, defeating Framingham State 25-11, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-23, while falling to Emerson in four games 20-25, 27-25, 25-20 and 25-12. In the win over Framingham, Emma Hewling had 16 kills and two blocks for the Camels (9-13) while Eliza Wolcott added 12 kills, Elle Kass 19 digs, four assist and three aces, and Grace McPhee and McKaela Simons combined for 44 assists. In the loss to Emerson, Hewling had 15 kills, McGee 28 assists, Kass 21 digs, Avery Light 11 kills and Jenny Kellogg 10 digs.

    • Coast Guard lost a pair of matches at Amherst's Hall of Fame tournament, falling to Bates 3-1 and Bowdoin 3-0. Angelou Dunton had 18 kills and 26 digs, Bridget Boyle had 21 kills, Veronica Hine had 35 digs and Makenna Martin had 61 assists for Coast Guard (17-10). 

    Men's swimming

    • No. 22 Coast Guard opened its season by winning all 13 events during a 146-33 win over Colby Sawyer. Michael Blake (1,000 freestyle, 10:17.16), John Feller (200 free, 1:50.44), Joe Rodriguez (50 free, (20.87), Eric Fuhs (400 IM, 4:24.78), CJ Omweg (100 butterfly, 54.53), John Pompay (100 free, 48.59), Devin McClure (100 backstroke, 54.45), Taylor Rowe (500 free, 4:57.53), Chasse Sodemann (100 breaststroke, 59.35, Marshall Seguin (1-meter diving, 245.47 points) and Samuel Severson (3-meter diving, 171.22) each won an individual event for the Bears.

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard won all 13 events in a 147-49 season-opening win over Colby Sawyer. Kristen Durham Young won both the 100 freestyle (54.06) and the 200 freestyle (1:57.99) for the Bears while Elena Calese won the 1-meter (148.56 points) and the 3-meter (183.00) diving events to lead the Bears.
