    Local roundup: UConn ousted from NCAA field hockey tournament

    College Park, Md. — No. 2 Maryland scored in the 76th minute to break a 1-1 tie and went on to beat No. 5 UConn 2-1 in overtime on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division I field hockey tournament.

    The Huskies (19-4) won the national championship last season, as well as in 2013 and 2014. Freshman Abby Gooderham scored off a penalty corner at 23:35, but Maryland (21-2) tied the game two minutes later. UConn's senior class finish with a record of 86-7.

    Women's basketball

    • Avery Point, ranked No. 3 in NJCAA Division III, suffered its first loss of the season with a 89-59 decision to Jamestown Community College. Waterford's Mia Brennan had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Kalianna Dingui came off the bench for 17 points for Avery Point (3-1).  

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard Academy swept a tri-meet from host WPI and Division II Southern Connecticut on Saturday, defeating the Engineers 186-114 and the Owls 22-78. Senior Taylor Rowe won the 1,000 freestyle (10:04.74) and 500 free (4:47.94) for the Bears while junior Joe Rodriguez won the 50 free (21.10) and 100 free (47.49), sopohomore Eric Fuhs won the 200 breaststroke (2:0-6.90) and 200 individual medley (1:58.01) and freshman Devin McClure won the 200 free (1:44.40) and 200 backstroke (1:56.31).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard swept host WPI 161-139 and Southern Connecticut 186-114 on Saturday as Kristen Durham-Young won the 200 free (1:57.10), 50 free (24.85) and 100 butterfly (59.49), while Josie McGuire won the 1,000 freestyle (10:48.79) and 500 free (5:14.07), and Sophia Furigay won the 100 backstroke (1:00.84) and 200 back (2:20.21).

    H.S. cross country

    • The Williams School competed in the NEPSTA Division IV 5K race on Saturday in Thompson. The girls' team finished fifth out of 33 teams with 152 points and the boys were 13th in the 38-team field with 370.

    Mary Madaus led the girls' team with a third-place finish in 21:29 followed by Grace Cassineri (9th, 23:34), Sydney Swann (35th, 26:05), Anna Terry (50th, 28:04), Carly Straub (77th, 28:44), Samanta Karlson (79th, 28:52) and Katie Burzin (107th, 31:48). The top finisher in the boys' race was Hartmut Doerwaldt, who was fourth with a time of 18:36, followed by Philip Knowlton (21st, 19:33), Hunter Dolphin (85th, 22:11), Jackson Meisner (127th, 23:33), Jasper Wright (120th, 24:22) and Zheng Lian (140th, 26:01).

    Qualifying for the NEPSTA All-Division Cross race on Saturday in Southborough, Mass., were Madaus, Cassineri and Doerwaldt.
