    Local roundup: Wheeler girls open season with win over Ellis Tech

    Killingly — Savannah Galluci had 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals as Wheeler opened its 2018-19 girls' basketball season with a 38-16 non-conference win over Ellis Tech.

    The Lions led 22-6 at halftime.

    Molly Butremovic added nine rebounds, five points and three steals for the Lions while Ady Hauptmann had six points and two steals in her first varsity start.

    Boys' basketball

    • Zain Alam scored 15 points as Williams School lost to Forman 51-42 in its final game before the winter break. Josh Laggis added five assists for the Blues.

    Women's basketball

    • Freshman Amina Wiley had 14 points and 12 rebounds as Mitchell College won its fourth straight game with a 55-33 non-conference win over Saint Joseph. Dejia Santana added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Mariners (5-3) while Le'Sandra Turner finished with 12 points.

    • Caroline Pangallo scored 13 points and Margaret Corcoran added 12 as Connecticut College cruised to a 63-30 home win over Nichols College in a non-conference game. Sami Ashton added seven points and seven rebounds for the Camels (9-2).

    College honors

    • Mitchell senior Domenico Santiago was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Week in men's basketball for the third time this season after averaging 21.0 points and 16.5 rebounds during a pair of wins last week. The 6-foot-5 center ended his week with 27 points and 19 rebounds as the Mariners handed Coast Guard Academy its first loss. Santiago is averaging 21.3 points and 16.7 rebounds through six games and is the top Division III rebounder in the nation.

    • Mitchell freshman Le'Sandra Turner was named NECC Rookie of the Week in women's basketball. Turner averaged 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Mariners posted a pair of wins last week.

    • Coast Guard's Packy Witkowski was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week in men's basketball. The junior set CGA single-game records with 40 points and 10 3-pointers in a win over Connecticut College and added 21 points in a loss to Mitchell, averaging 30.5 points and seven rebounds in the two games while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 52.2 percent from beyond the arc.

    • UConn's Katie Lou Samuelson was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball. The senior averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists during a 2-0 week for the No. 1 Huskies, including 26 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in a win over Seton Hall. She is averaging 20.1 points. 7.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the season.

    • WPI's Dave Chen, a freshman from Niantic and East Lyme High School, was named NEWMAC Men's Swimmer of the week. Chen swept the breaststrokes as WPI defeated host Wesleyan, No. 11 Tufts and No. 18 Williams on Saturday, winning the 50-yard breast in 26.45 secondsd, the 100 in 57.63 and the 200 in 2:08.89.
