    Around the region

    • Cornell sophomore Rhys Hammond (Stonington) ran a personal best time of three minutes, 43.79 seconds in the 1,500 meters to place seventh at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville last weekend. His time was the fifth fastest in school history.

    • Redshirt freshman pitcher Ryan O’Connell (Waterford) has appeared in 10 games for the St. Bonaventure baseball team. In his last appearance, O’Connell went two innings, allowing three hits and a run in a 4-3 loss to Saint Louis.

    • Tufts sophomore pitcher Sophia DiCocco (Norwich Free Academy), improved to 11-4 with a complete game performance in a 4-1 win over Trinity. DiCocco gave up four hits and an unearned run, striking out four, for the Jumbos. She lowered her earned run average to 0.52. She also was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference pitcher of the week.

    • Freshman reliever Griffin Pontbriant (NFA) pitched two scoreless innings for the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball in a 2-1 loss to Rhode Island College on Saturday. Pontbriant hasn’t allowed a run in six of his last seven appearances, lowering his earned run average to 2.10. He has walked five and struck out 22 in 25.2 innings for the Warriors (26-3, 11-1), who reside in first place in the Little East Conference.

    • Graduate student Cassie Woods (Fitch) went 5-for-8 with four runs scored in ECSU’s softball sweep of UMass Boston. She was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a 6-2 win in game one and 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 9-0 victory in game two. She leads the Little East in batting average (.521), runs scored (41) and hits (49).

    Alexis Michon (Montville) earned the win in the first game, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out 14. She is 14-1 with a 1.17 earned run average and 125 strikeouts and 14 walks in 89.2 innings.

    Also at Eastern, Shay Ventresca (Montville) had five goals and two assists in a 21-9 win over UMass Dartmouth on Saturday. Kaylea McCourt (Bacon Academy) added her fourth goal of the season.

    ECSU junior transfer Collin Wiltshire (Ledyard) set a facility record in the triple jump (47 feet, 3/4 inches) in winning the ECSU Invitational on Friday, earning him Little East rookie field athlete of the week honors.

    • Sophomore Payton Sutman (Waterford) came on in relief for Holy Cross against Bucknell on April 17 and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out one and walking one.

    • At Southern Connecticut State University, Karlie Rowe (East Lyme) was honored during the women’s lacrosse team’s senior day on Saturday. Rowe entered the game ranked seventh all-time in program history in goals scored with 86. She added to her total by scoring four goals in a 12-9 win over Saint Rose and also had an assist.

    Sophomore Hannah Holmes (Bacon), who has played in 13 games this season, helped anchor the defense.

    Also at Southern, graduate student Jayden Delaporta’s fourth home run of the season lifted Southern to a 1-0 victory over Stonehill in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. Delaporta (Fitch) is first on the team in runs scored at 25, second in home runs and RBI (20), and third in batting at .313.

    • Senior midfielder Jackyln Lavoie (Waterford) had a goal and an assist in the Stetson women’s lacrosse team’s 19-3 rout of Delaware State last week. On the season, she has seven goals and three assists in 12 starts. Junior defender/midfielder Kate Johnson (Stonington) has appeared in 12 games and chipped in five goals and two assists.

    • Senior Calvin Jacey (Fitch) is one of top offensive players on the Emerson College baseball team. Jacey owns a .320 batting average with six doubles a triple and nine RBI.

    • Junior defender Sarah Christensen (East Lyme) notched her second assist of the season in the 12th-ranked York College women’s lacrosse team’s 17-8 win over Widener on Saturday. Christensen has played in 16 games, starting 14.

    • Senior face-off specialist Sam Kury (Montville) helped the No. 2 ranked Le Moyne men’s lacrosse team beat Franklin Pierce, 15-4, on Saturday. He has a team-high 72 ground balls in 12 games and won 64 percent of his faceoffs.

    • Grove City College senior midfielder Michael La Forte (Waterford) had three assists in a 27-2 rout of Franciscan on Saturday. La Forte leads his team with 34 assists in 14 games and also has 14 goals.

    • Senior catcher Briana Beverly (St. Bernard), the No. 2 hitter in the Wentworth softball lineup, walked, singled and drove in a run in Sunday’s 7-3 win at Roger Williams. Beverly has had a hit in 11 of the last 12 games. She’s batting a career-best .400 with three home runs and 28 RBI in 32 games. The Leopards have set a program record for wins in a season (21).

    • In UConn baseball news, redshirt sophomore Kevin Ferrer (Stonington) continues to be sidelined with an oblique injury. Ferrer hasn’t been in the lineup since April 5.

    Freshman Ian Cooke was chosen as the Big East pitcher of the week after throwing eight scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out seven in an 8-0 shutout of Boston College last week. Cooke improved to 6-0 with a 1.95 earned run average. UConn (32-8) is tied for first place with Creighton at 8-1.

    Tracking the Bears

    • Coast Guard Academy junior Caleb Holdridge (Waterford) was selected as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference offensive athlete of the week in men’s lacrosse. Holdridge had 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in two games. Junior goalie Dan Lucas earned defensive athlete of the week honors after making a program record 18 saves in a 13-9 win over Springfield on Saturday.

    The Bears (9-6) are in second place in the league at 4-1 with one regular season game to go. They host Emerson on Saturday at 1 p.m.

    • The men’s tennis team is the top seed in the NEWMAC tournament for the first time in program history. The Bears, who went undefeated in league play at 6-0, received a first round bye. They will host the semifinals on Saturday, facing the first-round winner of No. 5 Clark and No. 4 Wheaton at 10:30 a.m. Finals are set for noon on Sunday.

    • The women’s lacrosse team looks to add to its program record-setting six wins in league play when Coast Guard (10-5 overall) hosts Springfield in the regular season finale on Wednesday. The Bears already have qualified for the NEWMAC tournament.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • Mitchell College junior Lelo Martinez (New London) was named the New England Collegiate Conference player of the week in baseball for the first time in his career. Martinez batted .533 with a double, four runs scored and five RBI in four wins last week. He has a career-best .394 batting average, which ranks third in the league. He’s second in the NECC in runs scored with 70 and also has 44 RBI.

    The first-place Mariners (23-7, 6-2) visit second-place New England College (15-12, 5-3) for an important doubleheader on Wednesday.

    Freshman pitcher Dan Driscoll (Waterford) leads the NECC in earned run average at 0.84. He’s 4-0 and has a save.

    • The softball team’s 15 wins overall are the most for the program since winning 17 in 2015. Freshman Emily Reynolds leads the league with a 3.61 earned run average.
