Woman dies in Laurel Hill Avenue car crash in Norwich

Norwich – A woman died in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon on Laurel Hill Avenue. The crash also sent two children in her vehicle to The William Backus Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police responded with the Laurel Hill Fire Department and American Ambulance to the area of 659 Laurel Hill Ave. shortly before 5 p.m.

Police determined one vehicle was traveling south on Laurel Hill Avenue toward the Preston town line when the driver lost control and crossed the double yellow center line sideways, into the path of an oncoming northbound vehicle, Norwich Police Lt. Christopher Ferace said in a prepared statement.

The unidentified operator of the northbound vehicle sustained minor injuries.

The woman driving the southbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Laurel Hill Avenue was closed for about four hours during the investigation. It was not yet snowing at the time of the crash and preliminary investigation revealed weather did not appear to be a factor, Ferace said.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of her next of kin. Ferace said the accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Officer Andre Rosedale at (860) 886-5561.
