Big firetrucks not allowed in Norwich St. Patrick's Day Parade Sunday
Norwich – Firetrucks, lights flashing and horns honking, are staples in any festive parade, but not this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in downtown Norwich.
Miria Toth, parade coordinator, said large modern firetrucks will not be allowed in Sunday’s parade, but smaller fire vehicles and antique trucks will be allowed.
Some downtown streets along the parade route are narrow enough in good weather, Toth said, and with the deep, high snow banks that now line the streets and block sightlines at intersections, spectators likely will gather in the streets in some spots.
During last year’s inaugural parade – without snow banks – trucks turning corners often came close to spectators who ventured into the street for a closer look, Toth said, so parade organizers decided to prohibit the large trucks this year.
Two fire departments, the Yantic Fire Engine Co. No. 1 and Bozrah Volunteer Fire Department, have registered to participate in the parade.
