Vineyard owner seeks permit to turn Mystic gas station into a wine bar

Mystic - The owner of Saltwater Farm Vineyard in Stonington is seeking a special use permit to turn Frank's Exxon service station at 30 Broadway into a 99-seat wine bar/cafe that includes a 30-seat outdoor patio.

Merrily Connery has submitted an application to the Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission which will now schedule a public hearing.

According to the application, the existing garage bays of the 1,900-square-foot station which is located at the intersection of Washington Street would house a barroom and indoor seating. There would be no live or amplified music and it would be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Food would also be served. Plans also show that the station canopy would remain with landscaping.

The application states that the change in use "is far more compatible" with the surrounding neighborhood that its use as a service station while landscaping and screening would mitigate any impact on neighbors.

"The landscaping, together with the small size of the outdoor patio, lack of amplified music and reasonable hours of operation will ensure no adverse impact on the surrounding area," the application states.
