New EL superintendent starts
East Lyme — Jeffrey R. Newton started Wednesday as the new superintendent of East Lyme Schools, following the retirement of former superintendent James Lombardo on Tuesday.
Newton, a graduate of East Lyme High School, was most recently the superintendent of schools in Hebron and also has served as director of special services for Westbrook Public Schools and as assistant principal and principal at the Dr. Charles E. Murphy School in Oakdale.
"I am humbled by the opportunity to begin my tenure working in a district that continues to demonstrate excellence, safe and supportive schools, and a commitment to education," Newton wrote in a letter Wednesday in which he introduced himself to East Lyme parents and guardians. "Being an East Lyme graduate myself, having the opportunity to return to my hometown to lead this fine school district is something truly special and dear to my heart."
"East Lyme has always been a community that is committed to ensuring our schools provide an excellent education that supports all students academically and socially," he continued in the letter. "This remains my focus as I join you all in continuing to maintain an outstanding school experience for every student who walks through our school doors. As we look to the future, I can assure you that there will be a continued commitment to excellence. We will remain a district that prides itself on being committed to the highest level of student achievement...."
