Brush fire burns several acres in Ledyard

About 50 firefighters from eight fire departments responded Saturday afternoon to a 10-acre brush fire in Ledyard’s Avery Preserve.

Shortly after 1 p.m., the Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire departments were called to 189 Avery Hill Road, where dry and windy conditions fueled and helped spread a large brush fire, Ledyard Fire Chief John R. Doucette said in a statement.

Six other fire departments responded as the fire quickly spread over 10 acres, the chief said, and firefighters used all-terrain vehicles to reach the far edges of the blaze.

Within about two hours, Doucette said, the fire was under control.

“The fire was stopped before it reached a nearby neighborhood, however blowing smoke and ash could be seen in the area,” he said.

One firefighter suffered a minor burn injury and was treated at the scene, the chief said.

The Ledyard Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the origin and cause of the blaze.
