Mahoney to take over as interim chief of police in Waterford

Waterford – The Board of Police Commissioners unanimously approved Lt. Brett Mahoney as interim Chief of Police for the Waterford Police Department Monday, according to First Selectman Daniel Steward. Mahoney may become the permanent chief.

“He’s shown a lot of leadership,” said Steward, a member of the board.

He said Mahoney is a graduate of the FBI Academy, holds a master’s degree and is the most senior lieutenant in the department.

The first selectman said Mahoney is being considered as a permanent replacement for Chief Murray Pendleton, who announced last month he would retire from his 48-year tenure with the department.

Steward said Mahoney would take over for Pendleton May 29.

“If things work right, yes, he moves on to chief,” said Steward.
