State police release preliminary Memorial Day weekend traffic stats
State Police have released statistics from Memorial Day weekend traffic enforcement Friday, Saturday and through 7 a.m. Sunday.
A State Police press release states that there have been 96 accidents within the window of time, including 13 accidents that produced injuries and one fatal accident.
Also in the three days, police have charged 17 for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 679 for speeding, 811 for seatbelt violations and 202 for other violations such as following too closely and texting.
Troopers are focusing on drunken driving violations, aggressive drivers, distracted drivers and speeding, according to the release. Sobriety checkpoints and drunk driving patrols are in place.
During Memorial Day weekend last year, state police logged 1,248 speeding violations, 954 seatbelt violations, 54 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and 4,142 other violations, according to the release.
Police investigated 301 accidents during the holiday weekend last year, 54 of which were accidents with injury, according to the release. None of the accidents last year were reported as fatal, according to the release.
