Tuesday is last day to switch parties, if a September primary is in the wings

Tuesday June 16 marks the deadline for municipalities to change polling places or voting districts in case there is a primary in September, and it is also the last chance for voters registered with a political party to switch affiliation and be eligible to vote in the primary — if there is one.

The website of the Secretary of the State's office lists time periods and deadlines for all kinds of official actions that go into running the Nov. 3 elections for municipal office.

The Secretary of the State cannot predict which parties in which towns may need to hold primaries to determine the party nominees for office, but in most years there are at least a few that crop up after the local party committees have made their nominations in July. Primaries this year will be held Sept. 16.

A person may vote in a primary in Connecticut only if registered as (1) a voter and (2) a member of the party in which the nomination is being contested. Both of those options are available until shortly before the primary, but Tuesday is the last time a Republican can register as a Democrat, a Democrat switch to the Republican party, etc.

To switch, check with the registrars of voters in your town of residence.
