North Stonington finance board votes to request chairman's resignation

North Stonington — The Board of Finance voted 4-2 Wednesday night to approve a resolution that asks Chairman Dan Spring to resign.

Citing a loss of confidence and trust in Spring’s ability to lead, member Emil Pavlovics made the motion at the beginning of the meeting.

During the ensuing discussion, member Brent Woodward said an action that occurred during a June 29 special town meeting “was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

At that meeting, residents were given the opportunity to vote on a clarification of the Board of Finance's original destination for $245,400 in Small Town Economic Assistance Program funds: putting the grant money into the town capital nonrecurring account.

But Town Treasurer Robin Roohr made an amendment to the motion — one that asked those present to allow the funds to be placed in the town's capital project fund instead — and the amendment and the amended motion both passed 8-7.

Other members Wednesday cited communication issues and an overall feeling that Spring was not in touch with the desires of the board.

Spring said after the meeting that he is “going to have to consider” resigning, and added that the motion was a surprise to him.

The board voted to adjourn immediately after passing the resolution.
