North Stonington emergency services building committee rejects bids for general contractor

North Stonington — The Emergency Services Building Committee decided on Monday to reject the bids of all five companies that hoped to become general contractor for construction of their new building.

In a Tuesday letter to the Board of Selectmen, committee Chairman Mark Perkins Jr. wrote: "Our intent at this time is to rebid the project in hopes of giving the contractors/bidders more time to provide accurate costs for construction."

Already, town officials pushed the bid opening day from July 24 to Aug. 4 after adding an addendum of about 70 pages to the originally advertised project, First Selectman Nick Mullane said.

He and Selectmen Bob Testa and Mark Donahue on Tuesday night agreed with the idea of rebidding the project.

Mullane said the base bids, which range from $5.44 million to $6.6 million, came along with several questions from contractors and therefore may be too high.

He said "there ought to be somebody to look through and proofread" the documents before going out to bid this time to make sure they are complete and to avoid any more bidder confusion.

Mullane was unsure on Tuesday to what extent the rebidding process will delay the project's overall schedule.

The Board of Selectmen chose Stadia Engineering Associates Inc., out of New London, as clerk of the works for the project on July 7.

Voters approved the $6.36 million emergency services building project in 2013.
