Couple moving in to apartment arrive to find kitchen on fire

Groton — A couple moving in to the first floor of a two-family house at 48 Carter Road on Wednesday morning arrived to find the kitchen on fire.

"I think people were getting prepared to move in, they were in process of moving in, they stopped by and discovered there was a fire in the house," Poquonnock Bridge Fire Chief Joseph Winski said.

The couple had moved boxes into the first floor and were returning to the house.

One firefighter suffered a minor knee injury fighting the blaze, which was reported at 10:26 a.m.

No one was home when the fire started, and the upstairs apartment was vacant, Winski said.

Though the fire was contained to the kitchen, smoke damaged quite a bit of the apartment, Winski said.

It took firefighters about 25 to 30 minutes to get it under control.

"I don't think it's livable at this point," Winski said, though the apartment is "definitely repairable," he said.

The couple still was living in a previous residence and had accommodations, he said.

Poquonnock Bridge received mutual aid from the Sub Base, City of Groton, Old Mystic and Mystic fire departments, as well as Groton Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
